Codecs

Same again. If you have a file that refuses to play, use gspot to determine what audio/video codecs it uses. FFDSHOW should play most, but you might need a couple of others.

I never get what people actually need codec packs for...

XviD
AC3Filter
CoreAVC (if you use H.264)
VobSub (if you use subtitles)
FFDShow (for scaling, could use the decoders as a last resort)
Quicktime alternative
Purevideo decoder (again optional)

Half of my friends' computers that I end up fixing involve them being retarded with a codec pack...

The only thing I don't like about vlc is that it opens a new window everytime instead of replacing the old one. Is there a way to stop that? Or am I just both blind and stupid ..hehe

For people who need more than 5 codecs and dont want to spend ages downloading tons of seperate codecs and installing and updating them all seperatley. Espically when you do a lot of video transcoding or need to handle uncommon file types.

Why keep downloading them then? Hard drives are there to store data dude :p

Codec packs are the spawn of Satan if you're even mildly series about encoding or decoding.

Prefer x264 myself, certainly for encoding. Brilliant compression while maintaining top quality. Certainly beats XviD into a cocked hat.

X264 is the best encoder, but that doesn't help much for playback :p (CoreAVC is decode-only).

Yeah I know, I tried it a while back. Poor wording (and a complete lack of a sentence I was going to add) on my previous post, sorry.

Should have made it clear that I prefer to just use x264 for decoding as well as encoding. It's just all round great.

Store the codecs you need in a \backup\codecs directory. If you need to reinstall windows you can then access these files quickly. I don't know why you have to "constantly download them" or "takes ages to download"

For the majority of people, FFDSHOW plus mpeg II codec should cover most files.

Because you need to update them.

And what exactly do you do with new releases of K-Lite packs?
If you only download specific updated codecs, that's only 1MB at the most.

There is no reason to install mega codec packs. Regardless if you need that many I would take a guess you're dealing with ***** material. If you encode them yourself you'll only install a couple.

Downloading one pack saves time finding out which codecs need updating and which ones don't. When I encode files to different formats wether it be, ogg, mp3, flac, monkeys, tta, aac I don't want to be looking for codec updates for every single one.
