So I have a .wmv file that Media Player 11 in Vista doesn't like.
It gives the generic "Unable to play" pop-up even though I do have a good number of the most popular codec's installed on my machine.
Now I'm not a fan of Codec packs to be honest, I'd rather just install the ones I need.
However nothing seems to be able to help identify the codec's required for this file, so I looked at the packs.
The K-Lite pack seems the most popular, so I made a System Restore point and grabbed it.
Now I also do not like the "Media Player Classic" which comes with the K-Lite pack.
So I choose to install all of the codecs, but not the player.
This way I should be able to use Media Player 11 with all of these new codec's.
Unfortunately I still cannot play this file - Media Player 11 moans about lack of codec or check your audio setup etc.
So I install the K-Lite pack once more, this time allowing Media Player Classic to install.
Media Player 11 still hates the file, Media Player Classic plays it.
So now I'm very confused - surely both Media Player 11 and Classic are using the same "pool" of codec's installed on my system?
So how come one can play this file and the other can't?
Although this file can now be played I just cannot stand Media Player Classic.
If I click on a link to a .mpg, .avi, .wmv on a webpage I want it to play it automatically, or give me the option to play it.
Once WM Classic has been installed the only option I appear to have is "Download" or "Cancel".
So two questions:
1. Is there a piece of software you can download and run and then point at a media file and it tells you what codecs are required for play back?
2. Is there a good codec pack that I can install under Vista that will install a load (all of the most popular) codec's but continue to allow me to use MP11 for everything except Quicktime and RM?
