klite codec pack.
Includes ffdshow, all rare video codecs, sound codecs for .ac3 .ogg, .flac, etcetc...

Don't do that. Find out what the videotype is and install the individual codec, not dozens of codecs

Exactly why, in every single codec I find myself needing a new one a week or so after, much easier to do em all in 1 shot. All it does is take up a tiny bit of the hdd, I see no disadvantages in just installing a big pack wich will have everything you need.

Oh really? I've played lots of video/audio files. The vast majority play in WMP with FFDSHOW. Only one or two .TS files and a couple of others. Out of hundreds of AVI's.

FFDSHOW
Quicktime Alternative
Realtime Alternative
VLC, only used when WMP doesn't play.

I have a lot of stuff that wont run on ffdshow: Mainly .flv, .flac, .ogg, .mpc, etc... Main lack of ffdshow is the lack of proper sound codecs, klite includes all, even rare video and sound codecs.

No problem here.

I Use Winamp instead. Which includes support for those files.
Or Squeezebox.

Winamp is less comfortable to use than wmp imho, also often had to reset my output device for no reason  .
Nothing imo beats wmp's minimnize to taskbar, media library, nice looks, logitech media keys support, ease to use, easy auto ripping @ loseless quality, automatic album cover search, etc...
Not to mention it's a lot easier to manage playlists in wmp ( yes i play everything mixed, boring imo if listening to just 1 artist.).
Also winamp takes longer to load than wmp, and god knows how many time's the damn thing unlocked in a lot of seperate windows, I want everything, video field, controlls, playlist: in 1 window, but winamps always undocked from eachother  .

EDIT: sure winamp ism roe moddable, and prolly better once modeed, but I really can't be bothered searching & dling mods & plugins.

people only really need codec packs if they are downloading this that and everything else on the web. if you stick to decent sources then they will be encoded with the most usual codecs, none of this obscure crap that you have to go looking for:)

I thought most people did, I do anyhow, got over a terrabyte of junk ( about 80 gb of music). And a lot of stuff just refuse to work on basic ffdshow.

i dont bother with it any more tbh, its too much hassle. iso's of disks and the odd video from youtube or whatever are the only thing i keep on my pc these days.
