Coffee got into case + ruined my components - what parts to replace?

Hello,

My fool of a little brother flung his NDS across my room in frustration (the thing froze while he was playin pokemon), resulting in a mug of coffee spilling thru the fan opening at the top of the Antec p180.

My screen went blank right away altho the system was still running. I turned it on and off a few times... it was powering up but nothing was showing on the screen, now it won't power up at all. I've looked in the case and the coffee has been dispersed all over the place, the ram and mobo look completely screwed. The cpu looks alright,i can't tell if it works or not. Im not sure about the graphics card either... the top of it is sticky with coffee :/

The rig was as follows:

DFI Lanparty Ultra-D - ruined
2gb corsair ddr 2 pc3200 - ruined
7800 GTX - not sure if this is screwed
amd x2 4400 - not sure if this is screwed

Im wondering if i should order the parts above, or look at an intel setup... (the mobo, ram and cpu, a 6300 maybe?)

If i have to, i will sell the villains ps3 to pay for these upgrades :/
 
To be honest your due an upgrade anyway, give it a couple of weeks as the C2D prices will drop and then oder your self a new rig, sell the parts you know that work and try to test the rest and then sell if they work.

On the other hand its not a bad processor you have there if you want to stick with amd and get a new mobo, ram and gfx etc.


Also sell the PS3 to pay for it :) and claim on your house insurance and get a GTX with the money :cool:

Anything that got wet will probably be screwed, coffee is pretty bad. However let it dry out for a couple of days and you could be lucky. If you have accidental damage on your house insurance you could claim on that.

And what's wrong with his computer Gary? :o looks pretty newish to me, definatly capable of any newish game. and there was me thinking my AMD64 3000+ 1GbRAM / ATI 9600XT was decent :o

I'd have thought mobo would have gone, and likely the graphics, CPU and RAM though should be ok, unless power managed to surge through the two of them.

The reason I say this about the RAM is that the pins are covered by the method in which they connect to the mobo.

Best thing to do is find a mate with a similar PC, and test all your bits in his (apart from the mobo as that's bound to have gone). By all the bits, I mean CPU, RAM, GPU, HDDs, etc. - If there was any form of power surge, you want to make sure what was and wasn't fried.

Oh, yeah and wait till the 22nd (or shortly after) and get an Intel setup.

As for house insurance, only if it doesn't effect the premiums, and flog the PS3...do you really need it?

The thing is, i need this pc asap... I have university work to hand submit in 5 weeks. and i really need to order these parts tonight!

I will be upgrading to a completely new system in September, when i start working... and will be leaving this pc with the parents.

What parts would you suggest i order at this moment in time. I dont want to spend more than is necessary, the parts i had did the job... but im wondering if i could get a better setup for a small bit extra... I have been completely out of the loop since i built this pc almost 2 years ago :/

The ram does definetly look to have had it... Its covered in sticky coffee and most the connections at the bottom have gone black... It was a job to even extract the ram from the mobo :/

I think if you sell the PS3 he will hate you for a long time and youll end up buying a new one (I am only 16 i know how id feel).

However, get him an xbox360 once hes been a good boy, they are better in my opinion and the game line up on them is better also.

There are so many things which i generaly dont like about how Sony developed the PS2. It broke on me so easly as well. Im not sure what went wrong exacly but i dont know hardly any people who had PS2s live over 2 and ahalf years. I never did anything to it, they just stoped reading disks.

The PS3 also had many screwed up things. Like it was shipped without a buddy list for online play i beleive.... how you going to play with friends ??? duh!


Anyway, enough ranting about how much you should get a better priced Xbox 360 because of how much nicer they are and because blue ray disks are not really used yet and your paying a fortune for a blueray reader that you can get cheaper when they are achuly used to plug into your xbox360... anyways...

To the OP, does it need to play any games or be powerful ? As if you are leaving this in september, you don't want to spend a whole lot on it, right ?

Well hes going to have to buy him a new one if he sells it. As its pritty likely he will. I cant imagin a kid lossing a PS3 and then never wanting one ever again. The xbox is cheaper. If you get him that you should be able to make a profit hehe :)

Then again, selling it second hand. didnt think about that.
 
He caused this issue, he should lose his gamestation and why would you feel for him ?, it will teach him to behave, he is the criminal here, his brother is the victim :cool:
 
Forb, no it doesn't need to be powerful for games at all... I just want something of the same power level, or if for a small bit extra i can get somethin more powerful, id go with that. It will be used primarily for 3dstudio max and photoshop over the next 3 months....


This fella does not deserve a ps3, when he loses on it he throws the joypad across the room. I felt like kicking the living **** out of him when he did this... I don't know how i held back but i managed to, and went straight down and lifted his ps3... That was the end of it. This will be a good lesson for him in life. I've ok'd this with the father and his ds is going also. Go me.

8Dave, yes i know he will want one again.... He loves playing resistance online and was so looking forward to getting rainbow 6 this weekend. The thing is, he won't be able to get one...My father is not going to buy him another one, i sure as hell won't be buyin him another one.... a 14yr old kid isn't going to be able to scrape 500 quid together, so he will just have to do without

id say a lot better, are hds ok.. I guess you need new PSU. you can clean the case up?

Silly me, thought you were his father. He doesn't sound like he deserves one really. I hope you get a good price for it ;)
 
I think the PSU and hdd's should be fine.... they are in different compartments within the case... i dont think coffee could have entered the psu..

Is the intel cpu that good? 50 quid lol? i see that the 4400x2 still costs 100quid now... The cpu is definetly very important for me, as it is 3dsmax is very cpu intensive.

would the 4300 be worth the extra 25quid seein as it has 2mb l2 cache?... or are these 2140's just beasts of clockers? Im going to overclock this thing with an air cooler, which air cooler would you suggest?

Also i think i might go for 4gb of ram... 2 x 2gb or 4 x 1gb? I'll be using windows xp with this setup
