I'm really struggling with the Hill 317 / Mortain mission. The hill just gets overrun with about 10 mins left and I can't seem to hold it or get it back. Even with the Howitzer and Artillery support on the go I just get swamped. Then just when it couldn't get any tougher - along come the Panzer tanks :( How on earth do you do this mission?

Tips and tricks, people, tips and tricks!

PS. frickin' great game!

it took me ages to do that mission. I found that just holding the hill and building up a massive infantry force helped. (although i was airborne) And i managed to keep hold of the northen victory point with 1 set of airborne :P.

Truely an awsome map and truely hard, but when you complete it you will be super happy.

Its solid, I haven't attempted it in about 4 months but when I did, I ended up always getting overrun by their tanks, they had packs of 5 popping out of everywhere.

I found this much easier when i held the village of Mortain... to the left of the main hill - it doesnt get badly attacked, so an MG post and an AT gun should suffice as the HQ can build engineers.

For upgrades, get Defensive Operations first and tank trap most of the routes up the hill using normal infantry, and lay mines too - lots of mines!! - it forces the PzKpfw IV's to trundle up 1 or 2 routes - which can be covered with crossfire AT guns (use AP shells when under heavy attack)

Also build plenty MG positions, yes they get tonked badly by German incoming artillery, but they dont add to your population cap and they can slow infantry to a crawl - ideal for grenades or snipers (though snipers are too pricey and die too easy on this map i find)

Keep building more infantry as and when you can, pause fairly often to oversee the battle, and try to drop howitzer rounds onto lines of attack when the inf/tanks are held up by your defences.

Hope this helps :-)

I got well knobbed off with this mission, and on reflection, decided that I was playing this game for fun and amusement and getting bored with the grind. So hardcore gamer that I am, I just dropped the difficulty level to easy.

If that's not your style, matt_fsr's advice is good

Just pack ATs on the hill and have a few MGs about, don't bother wasting men/resources on holding the outer area. Have a few sly mortor squads to take out the pinned soldiers. 5/6 well placed ATs do make mince meat out of their tanks and the mortor/art take out the large swamps of men. MGs prevent the few that manage to get up getting into the base and causing havoc.

Takes a few times to get the ATs/MGs placed right but it's a pretty tight tactic I found.

I found having a couple of the armoured cars on hand very useful too- they can mine approaches, plug gaps, and if placed right can inconvenience the tanks too. Very easy to get them into the rear arcs.
