Coil Whine issue ..

So I posted a thread about possible GFX card upgrade a few days ago, and the response I received was helpful and very much appreciated thanks all ...

Since day one of my last build my R9 280x has suffered from horrendous coil whine and I have been putting up with
for near 2 years now, (tried RMA to Gigabyte and Overclockers both were rejected).

Now that I am in the market looking for a new GFX card and considering the disappointment with my current R9 280X because of the noise it makes, I find myself having second thoughts about even bothering buying a new one, if its going to have a coil whine issue which Overclockers or The Manufacturer will not accept a return/replacement for.

My feeling is if I spent X amount of my hard earned cash on a new higher end GFX card I want to be 100% satisfied with it and not be left high and dry with a unit I'm not so happy with .

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter ? or should I just man up, buy a bigger, louder heaset and stop whining :D ?

coil whine can be down to the PSU as well, as Cyanide said what make\model PSU are you using?

i have a 390 and owned a 970 which both seemed fine to be (got a Corsair 750W PSU)

Coil whine can be a big issue for some cards but as mentioned it can be aggravated by other components (psu).

Interesting foot note (or maybe not)

Many GTX 970 owners suffer from this and Overclockers was accepting returns for this reason on behalf of many card manufacturers even if it was not originally bought from Overclockers (proof of purchase required). The only condition being as long as it was happening when used in conjunction with a Gold rated PSU or higher. Showing that even reasonable quality psu's can still influence whine to some extent.

True.

With superflower 1000W platinum, the GTX780Ghz and R9 Nano do have coil whine but the 295X2 not.

With Corsair 750W PSU Bronze (my old one), nor GTX780Ghz neither the R9 Nano have coil whine. (cannot test the 295X2)

To remedy the coil whine, the power flow to the card has to be changed. eg on the Nano almost all the whine went away by using -42mv/+21% 1050/545 settings.

On the 780 I have to ramp it up and overclock the card to it's limits, before I get rid of the whine.

I've never had coil whine in my life. My 970 is super quiet.

Ive got a gigabyte g1 980ti and the coil wine is terrible. PSU is a corsair 1200w one (cant remember the exact model). All bought from OCUK. You think I could get that looked at or is there anything I can do to stop it? Only happens during gaming, dunno if that's normal as dont know much about it

As I said my Gigabyte R9 280 X suffers from terrible from this issue, I have now tried the card in a PC powered by an OCZ 850W psu using a pcie adapter and there was no audible whine from the GFX card . I would suggest trying your card in another PC though ..

I had never even heard of coil whine until I got my 980 and then I got it BUT only in WoW and only on the character selection screen when it can hit 1000+Fps :)

That is something I can live with ;)

Other that that it is super quite and lovely and cool with its reference cooler, I love it.

A Corsair CX750 ... I started using Virtual Super Resolution with Vsync @ 1440p which has silenced it by some considerable amount, but changing voltage settings ect in catalyst I have yet to try .

I gave my Radeon 290x to my friend who has same exact PSU as you. For me that card was completely quiet. For him it has coil whine big time. So it is safe to say your PSU is the reason ;)

My PSUs were Corsair H series, Seasonic X series and the one in my sig right now ;)
