Hey all

Just took delivery of a new strix gfx card bit unfortunately it's got some wicked coil whine which isn't great for a living room htpc

Just contacted customer service who basically told me sorry , not sorry :(

Is there anything I can do to reduce coil whine other than wrap the case in a quilt e.g leave a game running to "burn in" the card

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hey

It's a corsair hx620 , I might take the psu out another PC just to make sure it's not down to that.

Cheers

Well exercise your given rights then
and stick to your guns if you are not happy regarding your purchase by law you have 14 days no quibble

If they won't replace it, DSR it and buy the replacement from elsewhere. Preferably don't buy anything else from there in future.

No one should have to put up with coil whine period

usually once you have coil whine its there to stay ...its usually the card or psu at fault ....i have tested many times changing psu's and it usually solves the issue but most of the time its down to the card...Yes you can burn in and hope to knock the coils back to being stable to stop them resonating vibrating ...

All cards will have coil whine but to hear you would have to place your ear next to the inductors.

If its bad meaning you can hear it with being a foot away then the card should be sent back PERIOD there is no excuse for the manufactures never mind retailers to say its passable its not
even with paying a £100 never mind over £500 it does not matter you are not happy so send it back just be firm and use your rights ...

Sorry I wasn't very clear yes bought from here.
I'll go through with the returns process and keep you posted.
Shame as the card was a nice upgrade

Have you thought about running the Heaven benchmark for a few hours? Seem to remember that cured some people's whine after the card "bedded in".

haha some retailers do make me laugh if you're not happy with the item within 14 days or some retailers it is 30 days you have the right to reject the item and ask for your money back or 30 days if the item/s hasn't been used and still want your money back. know your rights challenge them they haven't got a leg to stand on. especially as it was bought a day ago! challenge them! let us know how you get on :)

It was a 970 i bought , not sure if its due to it being such a popular card over the years but there seems to be a lot of people complaining about the 970 and coil whine.

I may use this situation to treat myself to a 1070 , the 970 was the sensible option as i will only be gaming at 1080p :-)

Guys, coil whine can be cured. Just let the card run few months, and limit the fps to around ~144 for the period.

GTX580, 780, 295X2, Fury Nano, all suffered from coil whine. Few months of usage and is gone.
