Coil whine , options?

Then they might not be good enough, They might have a high wattage rating but the components inside might not be up to scratch. Buy and evga G2 PSU like mine and try it, if it still whines send it back.

Not really.

Use a "neutral cure" Silicone Sealant: Momentive RTV-162 or Dow-Corning 796, etc. You'll see it on the big Caps and Inductors in power-supplies, etc. Don't use any other type of sealant, as they can be corrosive to electronics.

The above worked wonders in ridding my monitor's power-supply stages from terrible high-pitched coil whine.

Well after having a web note as well as a forum post declined, I'm having one last attempt and a friend is bringing his psu round so this will be the third psu tried.

The guy did say I should buy a platinum rated psu , I'm very reluctant to purchase one from here as if I still have the same issue I'm stuck with a silent / not silent gfx card and a psu I don't need :confused:

You can send it back if its within 2 weeks of you receiving it. Not sure why they are declining?! Just say its unwanted, no need to mention coil whine. You are well within your rights.

coil whine is random sometimes it will go sometimes it will stay sometimes it will get worse.

dont risk it and send it back, what if in a few months you decide to watercool the card? the coil whine will go through the roof and be so unbearable you wont wan to play on the PC.

the people in this thread are right. sometimes all the things said can fix the problem. sometimes.

limiting FPs isnt always a fix. most games i play are pretty intensive on the gpu so i dont need to turn vsync on as my fps doesnt go far past 60 anyway. i do turn it on though.

so you buy a new gpu cos its in your price range and states what power it needs. i be the card also says silent aswell? now they are saying you need a platinum psu which is almost as costly as the card itself...

if the card needs a platinum psu to operate silently then it should be stated in the product info.

will they guarantee it fixes the problem? if they do then you can try and the psu will be a decent upgrade for you and last many years. i wouldnt though, id just enforce the return. thats why you should always use a credit card when buying things like this.

This^ (and the debiting of your funds for products that aren't even in stock or even have an non-fictional ETA) is why I shop elsewhere these days. Poor show OCUK, poor show.

As others have said: send the card back, shop elsewhere.

I had slight coil whine on a previous card that completley disappeared when upgrading to a new PSU for a new build (a superflower 1000W, v good PSU's)

But, having said that if you've tested with 2 diffferent PSUs already, I would send your card back. I believe coil whine should be regarded as a fault though, and I wouldn't expect to have to pay for return postage as it should be returned as faulty.
OCUK and other retailers can be very flaky about certain issues like this. It's very poor customer service.

Nearly every GPU I have had has had coil while. 770 SLI, 970, 980 SLI, 980Ti SLI and now 1080 SLI.

I should really upload a video of how loud mine are with the door off.

re coil whine there is no excuse for the manufactures never mind retailers to say its passable its not

yes i understand it could be PSU related but i have had a fair few cards now that where nothing to do with the psu but the card

Please sort this OCUK i thought better of you

It's all pretty simple really...

1. By law (DSR/ now CCR) he can return the card to the retailer, no questions asked and get a refund. It will cost him his own money to post it back though.

OR

2. He can 'fight it out' and argue that coil whine is a fault, and the retailer should pay for the return postage and the customer can choose a replacement or a full refund.

For the good of us all, we should all try option 2 first whenever these things happen. Companies get slack if people willingly pay their own postage to DSR and 'save hassle'.

also, which 970 model did you specifically get?
some of the more expensive models have "anti-coil whine" improvements.
+ is the psu "80+ gold rated?" bcos that is what is recommended as minimum quality standard for these cards.

Hmmm, I'd be looking at your system/ PSU if you've always had this much coil whine

It's really not normal, nor acceptable.

In the last 3 years I've had SLI 780Ti's and now SLI 980Ti's. NONE of them had/ have any coil whine, whatsoever, using a Superflower 1000W platinum.

Hey all

Thanks for the tips so far , rather than never update the post I'll be honest and say what's happened.

So far I've tried a
corsair hx620
Nzxt 550w

Admittedly neither are cutting edge PSUs but I would have thought they could manage a 970

Friend just brought round a corsair tx850 which again its not the latest and greatest but it has reduced the whine dramatically.
It's still there but I can easily live with it and once the case is closed up and put in its place will prob not notice at all.

So looks like I may have to bite the bullet and get a new psu.
With it being a living room PC I would prefer one were the fans only spin under load , looking at a hx750i which meets Bagley's platinum recommendation and also only spins up on load.
Anyone have experience with this psu.

P.s still really not happy with the ocuk stone walling when they clearly are suppose to have no quibble returns lol
