Coil Whine

It's unfortunately a common problem with the 970s, which is why I went for that one OcUK were selling that guarantees no coil whine and they'll replace it if there is.

You could try return it?

This one is definitely coming from the gpu. It's so bad , I can feel it.

As the coils are taking the power from the PSU and converting it into usable stuff the GPU needs, it will always be the coils doing the whining but how much they whine will depend a lot on the PSU it's connected to (someone please correct me if I've got it too wrong in my simplistic mind!).

This means you can have a card that whines a lot connected to one PC, that is virtually silent when connected to a different one as the second PSU is producing a cleaner/better electricity supply that the coils aren't working as hard to convert, so aren't vibrating as much. It's probably not as simple as better quality PSU = quieter coils as the coils could be audible in just one frequency range and silent above or below it, but that's how I understand it.

If you've got a PSU you know plays nicely with the 970 you have, any chance of swapping the PSUs over so the quiet pairing are kept together? Or is the other PC you've tried it in not yours so that's not an option?

Trying to pin it down to one thing is really difficult. You basically just have to hope that your components like each other. Every 970 I tried with my EVGA Supernova G2 750W whined like crazy. The two 980s I had whined a little bit and so did my 980 Ti. On the other hand, every AMD card I've had in there (which covers just about everything from the R9 270 to the R9 390) has had zero whine, and neither does the GTX 570 I have or the 780 that I'm using right now.

In my case, it seems my PSU just doesn't agree with Maxwell, which is oddly specific, and even moreso when you consider that the 970s were markedly worse than the others.
