Coil whine

Hi all,

My 980ti has coil whine related to FPS, anything above 60 it kicks in.

I have now ordered and tried to EVGA 1070s both have coil whine above 60 FPS.

Could this be my PSU instead?

I think I have read in the past it is very common for a PSU to enable coil whine. I think it would be worth while to grab a good quality and high efficient rating PSU. Wait for a few more replies to make 100% sure i'm correct though.

Well I have just tried with a different power supply on all 3 graphics cards and all 3 have coil whine... I'm so confused...

Is it only during 60+ FPS gameplay? doesn't happen on other day to day computer tasks? I know my CPU/motherboard used to coil whine and I thought it was my GPU as it was mostly happening during gaming. I disabled some power saving features in the bios (disabled them all and enabled them 1 at a time to find which it was) and the whine went away completely.

Are these reference cards that whine? Or custom pcb?

My ASUS STRIX 980ti is a custom PCB but I'm not sure about the 2 EVGA 1070 SC I think they may be reference?

It is only during 60+fps gameplay, currently it isn't much of an issue as I game with Vsync in but I will be making the jump to 144hz soon and abviousoy my frame rate will have the ability to go above 60fps

I'll give the power features a go see if I can figure out what may be causing it.

I had coil whine when using my spare PSU (I am pretty sure it is a Corsair HX 750) but then got none when I swapped it out for my EVGA G2 PSU. Very often a PSU can be the reason for coil whine but not always.
