Coilwhine!! :(

So i finally got my 970 and it has the dreaded coilwhine :/ even with vsync i get coilwhine....

Rome 2 benchmark goes crazy and its only getting around 108 average 180 max but the whine is bad! With vsync it gets better but not by much. Menu fps of 700 and it screams!

As soon as i alt tab it stops and its coming from the card not the psu as i read sometimes its the psu?

Ive had a few cards in this PC, 670, 770 and now 970. The 970 is the only card thats done this.

I was dreading this! Apart from the coilwhine the card is ok, idles at 45c as the fans dont spin up but maxes out at 75c which seems a bit high?

Its the Evga SC the box was all sealed but card was just sitting in a plastic container. Asus packaging is much better. Not sure to try another Evga or a different brand? Im sending it back for sure this is crazy!

If i alt tab the sound is gone it only makes this sound in games. Even with vsync its noisy :/ never had coilwhine ever until now. There really is a problem with these 970s.

Runs games fine though nice and fluid so far but the sound is horrible!! I can even hear it coming through my headset!

Why cant things be simple? :/

Hi there

The Galax Infinity cards are due tomorrow with my coil whine reduction technology and were also guaranteeing them to be coil whine free were that confident and if you do experience it we will swap them out.

But so far our first coil whine reduction card has being a huge success with not one card returned for coil whine issues, most people have to push them to 1500-2000fps to make them whine which is well not typical usage.

Im getting coilwhine as soon as i open the game up... 60 fps with vsync still whining!

When i disable vsync it obv gets worse, i dont use vsync on every game either. Rome 2 one of my most played games has horrible whine!

I paid 252 in the sale i dont wanna pay 300+ with 1 year less warranty just so i dont get coilwhine! Ive never had coilwhine before something is up with these 970s.

I just want a coilwhine free one.

What is your PSU?

I have a 750w corsair PSU and ive had 3 cards in this PC so i know its not the PSU.

The card is an Evga, I've never had Evga before so maybe this is a poor brand? Im sure they have good rep though as i read a bit about them and people love them!

Thats my PSU, its not the best but ive never had coilwhine on any of my other cards, i know its the cards fault

There are so many people reporting Corsair PSUs and graphics cards that whine, you yourself said that your previous card whined and so is this one. I used to have an older Corsair PSU (Not the one I just sold) that whined with both of my 560 and 660 GPUS. Got an 600 HX and it was fine.

I do recommend the super flower though

When did i say my previous card whined? None of my cards have whined ever!

I doubt its the PSU thats just an excuse i mean its an 80 quid PSU. Theres no label saying if you own a corsair PSU youll get whine... fair enough if you have some cheap thing for 30 quid but 80 quid is not cheap for 85 you can get a gold rated superflower!

If the PSU caused whine id have noticed it on my last 2 cards. The 970 is whats causing whine.

How long does it take for them to test and return the card? I havent played on my PC since last week this is killing me!

Yeah i no its not the best but like you say its not the worst i will be VERY surprised if it doesnt whine for the rma people. The PSU has powered hungrier cards, this is a low power card why would the PSU struggle with it?

I feel your pain but i guess anyone who buys a gtx970 knows they are taking a bigger risk than normal of getting a card with coil whine or at least it seems that way judging by the threads all over the place. In your case i would say it's most likely the card and not the Psu but with PC's you never know. I take it you have no back up card.

Yeah its annoying as hell! Cant ocuk just refund and ill buy a different brand im not waiting another week with no card its a joke!

I know its not ocuks fault but jesus i didnt expect this, well i dreaded it but thought nah ill be fine lol.

Amazon is the only place i know who would send a replacement same day if i had problems, can i get a replacement sent out the same time as you collect the faulty card? I just cant last another week without my pc ive just spent 50 quid on games from the steam sale!

No backup card i sold it to put funds towards the 970 so im truly screwed! You do not expect this from something that costs nearly 300 quid!!

Im alt tabbing from rome 2s map and even at 47 fps the whine is there :/ otherwise my pc is basically silent.

Just to add my 2 cents.

I had 3 cards in my system with my Corsair PSU (CX750M) over the years and not one of them whined.

As soon as I put a 970 in it (Giga G1), both the PSU and card whined like crazy and I considered RMA'ing....the guys at OCUK opened an RMA ticket for me immediately.

However.

I met up with a fellow board member and tried my 970 G1 in his machine..........not....one....squeak.

So I changed to an EVGA 750 G2 PSU and mine is now SILENT.



Is it a fault with the card? I don't think so.

Is it a fault with the PSU? I didn't think so either.



BUT......I sent it back to corsair directly and when the report came back, they said it was and I quote, "DEAD" and gave me a new one.


So while it still ran my system perfectly and allowed me to game etc.........the people who made it, classed it as defective.

Ok i doubt its my PSU but ill be to test the card in 2 other PCs at the weekend. If it whines in them i know its not my PSU and ill expect ocuk to collect the card and send a replacement out.

I will contact corsair also and see whats going on if the whinr disappears.

Ok ive just been on the phone to where i bought my PC ChillB***t and theyve told me they are getting coilwhine on PSUs other than corsair PSUs. The coilwhine can come from the PSU and not the card this is why some people changing PSU are losing the coilwhine.

When the coilwhine comes from the card you can hear it directly coming from the card, like me, i can hear it coming from the card, the PSU is at least 1 foot away from the card in my case, i have a 820 phantom tower case and the PSU is right at the bottom.

They have had many 970s with horrible coilwhine, specially the palit ones he said but 9/10 the PSU is not linked to the coilwhine coming from the card and changing the card eliminated the coilwhine.

Since OCUK is so big, youd think they take 10-20 970s and go test them on 10 different PSUs or something, if the card whines 9/10 it will whine on EVERY PSU its tested on.

I know its not OCUKs fault that these 970s are so bad and the fact you have released your own and helped Galax make a coilwhine free one shows you know the 970s are bad but blaming PSUs is a joke.

I will still test the card in 2 other PCs but im sending it back as i know it will whine in them both. Its just a shame i have to jump through hoops to sort this out, i mean £253 quid i paid, its Evga, you can easy send this back to Evga to get your money back and send a replacement card to me to keep everyone happy!

The sound clip i posted shows how bad it is, do you honestly think i can sit and game with that noise?

Would be nice if Gibbo could comment on this as other retailers such as the one i mentioned above have also spotted the problem and are not recommending me to buy gold rated PSUs to get a few extra quid out of me :\ I know the corsair PSU i have is not the best but it runs my PC flawlessly until the 970 came along, the 970 is to blame NOT the PSU and im not gonna rush out and buy another PSU because of this.

Send the card back to us, we will test it, if it whines on our rig, we shall replace it, send it out to you and refund your shipping.

But Corsair Bronze PSU is not high-end and several users across the world are reporting whine issues with their PSU's.

I've said it before, you don't buy a Ferrari and run it on super market unleaded, it would run like a bag of nails.

A high-end VGA card is no different, they want a good clean power source.

Thing is thats a week of no gaming, id rather get a refund and buy from the Am**on as they will swap out instantly. I cant be sitting around with no PC waiting for cards to be tested when i know its faulty and will prove it when i test it in 2 other PCs at the weekend.

My PC only cost £1200 it doesnt need gold rated PSUs to run, ive never had problems with ANY other graphics card until the 970, the 970 is to blame not the PSU as mentioned above in my long post.

Bronze rated is good enough to run these cards any day, its low power consumption for christ sake...

You cant compare cars to graphics cards tbh lol. I know for a fact 100% there would be 970s whine free in this PC and other 970s that would whine. The 970s are a lottery!

Anyway ill test this weekend and send it back Monday.

Dude, I was SURE mine was faulty. It wasn't. It was the PSU.

My card AND psu were whining.

All i know is my card is silent now with a good PSU.

And that Corsair said my Bronze rated PSU was bucked when i sent it to them but it ran my machine fine.

See my PSU is not whining, im sure your PSU was to blame this time, that is a totally different situation than me, my PSU is not whining, the card is whining.

When i know the cards to blame a week is plenty... just because you had a dodgy PSU doesnt mean everyone does.

Why don't you reach out and be pleasant to someone and see if you can test your card in their rig like I did?

That's what I did and my card was fine.

BTW, i put my 770 back in mine and neither the PSU nor card made a squeak.

The CX750M is a turd PSU. Turd. TURD!

Im testing the card in 2 other PCs at the weekend. Turd for 970s you mean? Because until now its been flawless... I didnt see a sticker on the 970 box saying, "use premium gold rated PSUs or youll get coilwhine, avoid corsair at all costs!".

I have read a few reviews since suffering the problem advising that you are on crack using a turd psu like the cx750 with a top end system

Top end system? The PSU is fine and ive said 100 times no problem until the 970.

The 970 is not even top end! Its a low power graphics card, the cards ive had in here used more power than it, the card is at fault not the PSU.

You had a dodgy PSU now think its the law, you even admitted the PSU whined, so simmer down now...

The 670 was top end, the 770 was nearly top end, your point is? If i stuck a 290 in it wouldnt whine and that is top end, it also draws WAY more power, your point is void...

Youre missing the point, some of the 970s are dodgy, thats the only facts so far.

Im not here to play silly games with you because you had a dodgy PSU and replacing it fixed it. Im here to see what i can get done about sorting this card out.

I am just saying, if you send it in and the guys test it with a proper PSU and it doesn't whine. After a week, you will have the same card back in your lap.

Your PSU was faulty, mine is not. Now go wind your neck in... id be the first to admit it if my PSU was faulty, its not the best but its not faulty and plenty of people are running 970s with corsair PSUs whine free.

Some cards are just noisey, most people have headphones or speakers on when theyre playing games so they dont notice it. I play with sound off a lot and it would really bother me but luckily vsync holding the fps to 60 cures mine.

Btw Jinjur i just swapped from a enermax 1kw to a EVGA 850w and my card whines as loud as ever . Not sure suggesting he needs a new PSU every other post will help.

I wont be buying a new PSU, i know this one is fine, its still in warranty anyway and i could get a new one but its fine.

Alls i want is a replacement card, 5 days plus postage delays is a nightmare, id rather refund and buy elsewhere tbh.

Guys im 100% positive the whine is from the GPU, i would bet my life on it, im not that sure!

I can hear it as soon as it comes under load. Ive put my ear to the PSU and card and like i say they are miles apart and the PSU doesnt make a peep or id RMA it to Corsair asap.

Exactly its nearly £300 for a faulty product, it doesnt say it whines on the box or anything. You cant say " all graphics cards whine" because no they just dont at all or something would have been done about it years ago, if it whines its dodgy, its a simple as that.

If it whined and wasnt loud and i couldnt hear it i wouldnt mind, but go have a listen to that clip i uploaded, it really is like a pig squealing for its life!
