Have you patched it ? I haven't tried, I can try tonight, any reason is a good reason to play CoJ. 
a quick google turned this up from tweakguides:
There is a known problem with the OpenAL mode in Call of Juarez, and therefore it is strongly recommended that you select the Direct3D Sound API in the game, otherwise you will experience audio glitches and performance slowdowns. If you still have audio-related problems see the NoSound API option in the Advanced Tweaking section of this guide. This will disable all sounds and help you identify whether you have any performance issues due to your sound setup.
