So, I don’t drink much Coca-Cola, but I do enjoy it now and then as a treat — maybe once or twice a week, and always the full-sugar version.

Last week, I was in Aldi and picked up some Vive Cola, expecting it to taste awful. But at about £1.69 for 6 cans compared to around £4.35 for the same amount of original Coke (that’s 28p a can vs 72.5p for Coke), I thought it was worth a try.

Surprisingly, it tasted okay. Not perfect, but almost passable — and for that price, I can live with it!

My question is: there are lots of supermarket own-brand colas — Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl, etc. Has anyone found one that’s almost indistinguishable from the original?

There is no substitute for an ice cold can of proper Diet Coke. Can't stand the full fat one but my lord does that diet one hit differently when you want something fizzy.

I drink Diet Coke or Diet cherry coke. Strangely, I prefer Diet Pepsi but mix and match. If I having chocolate, or a curry, I have to have a pint of Diet Coke with ice!

I haven’t tried other brands for many years and when I did, I didn’t enjoy them. As a child my parents used to get a man in a lorry called Bilco and we had that!

Original Coke or nothing imo. Can't stand diet, zero, own brands, etc.

Glass bottles preferred, but generally super expensive / not available anymore.

Yup, nailed on the head.

Those who prefer DC are kidding themselves into thinking it tastes better. Marketing works wonders. It’s the same as low/non fat versions(of food). Fat is flavour.

Glass bottles are elite >>> Cans >>>>>>> draft >>> plastic bottles

The latter has a weird taste.

Personally, I find Diet Coke tastes awful, particularly the aftertaste. Whether you like it or not is always going to be subjective, as people have different preferences regarding artificial sweeteners.

not a fan of diet coke but full fat coke is hard to beat. Also very partial to a full fat cherry coke. Used to prefer Pepsi but I think they changed the recipe and it's not as good now.

yea, i can't put any 'diet' soft drinks in my mouth, they just all taste horrible and chemically to me for some reason.

Be careful with that Vive, even the full fat one has loads of aspartame etc in it, stuff that would normally be in the diet versions, I looked at both diet and full fat, and was quite surprised.

I find it really refreshing compared to regular coke. Other drinks I always go for the full fat versions but when it comes to coke it's diet coke or nada.

Full fat drinks have a hideous syrupy aftertaste. Diet and Zero versions are better, particularly from heavily chilled cans, but to be honest I find squash tops them all. My boxing teacher got me into Vimto and I've preferred that ever since.

But Diet Coke does taste nicer than Full Fat coke. I don't even care about the sugar because other drinks I always go for the full fat versions but DC tastes substantially better than regular coke.
Absolutely! I don't often drink fizzy drinks, but when I do it has to be DC.

Coke Light on the continent though... Urgh

The Tesco knock off of Coke Zero, fantastic ice lemon zero and Fanta fruit twist zero are all pretty good.

The Lidl versions of Fanta zero are also decent.

Always had a soft spot for full fat cherry coke used to live on it as a teenager tried it recently and it was nice but not as nice as i remembered.

Cause they don't even use cane sugar anymore, sugar based drinks use corn syrup so they taste like crap. Coke Zero tastes better because artificial sweeteners taste better than corn syrup
