Looking for some advice.

I'm currently experiencing some cold boot issues with the following system... Press the power button and the power LED lights up but nothing ever happens. Turn off and try again, sometimes it can be 3-4 times sometimes it can be right away. I've reset everything to default in the BIOS and then tried to set everything manually and it seems to make little to no difference.

What are the likely causes of such issues?

The system is
AMD 2400G
MSI Mortar B350M
16gb (8gbx2) Samsung B die DIMMs
Samsung 960 Evo SSD
Corsair RM550 PSU

Every update I can possibily find for the motherboard and CPU has been done.

I used to experience cold boot issues with my old PC (Intel 3570k asus Z77) but assumed it was the old motherboard... Can it be a PSU related problem or is it a common motherboard problem?

A long shot, but try a different kettle lead. I've known them to go bad. Also, if using an extension lead try plugging straight into the mains.

You said nothing ever happens but also said it can be 3-4 times or right away. So you're saying the PC sometimes won't boot from cold and sometimes will?

It could easily be the PSU but I would first check and reseat the RAM, and breadboard it to rule out shorting on the back of the motherboard etc. I've had intermittent boots with poor RAM connections, and I've had non-boots with shorted power connections

Sounds like what a lot of motherboards do when trying to boot with unstable settings before reverting to safe settings.

A bit of a long shot, but could it be that your system doesn't like running the ram at the default speed or something?

Default speed will be 2133MHz, anything higher is XMP profile so must be enabled in BIOS.

I think checking BIOS settings in general though could be a good call, if there's any changes. I'd do a full CMOS clear (switch off at wall, remove battery, short pins for 10 seconds).

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I will try a new kettle lead. An easy long shot. I have a trusty HX520 in another desktop which I can swap around to test.

Sorry that was a poor explination. I shouldn't have said nothing ever happens just nothing happens.

My first thoughts was it must be a BIOS setting related problem so I reset everything to default values. Not sure if a full CMOS clear is different from doing a "load default values" in the bios? As for RAM speed I ran it at two different settings to try and rule it out....

Auto everything (sets it at fairly high timings at 2133hz 1.2v)
and
Manual timings/voltage from the sticks at 2133hz

seemed to make little difference.

As ridiculous as it sounds I'm tempted to switch over to using HDMI instead of DP to connect my monitor as along time ago I had issues connecting with DP to an old monitor and found HDMI to be more reliable... The monitor is a Samsung C27HG70 so shouldn't have any issues but worth a try.

I've had a bunch of issues with DP, it seems like because it's capable of delivering more data back to the PC, it causes the PC to get a bit mixed up frequently. Unplugging a DP device causes fairly unpredictable behaviour it seems.
