Hi, I upgraded my system around 7 months ago with the following components E6750 cpu, Gigabyte p35-ds4 mobo, Crucial Ballistix PC2 6400 ram (2*1GB) and a xfx Geforce 8800 gts xt. I have 3 hard drives (2 sata) and the rest of the spec as in my sig.

I've been away travelling for 6 months, but the problem I have started not long after building the system. When I power on the fans spin up but only for about 1 second then it restarts and continues this cycle probably around 100 times before even getting to the post screen. After a while it does get further into the boot sequence and sometimes gets to the post screen before following the same cycle of restarting. Eventually, it does actually boot to windows.

I have no such problems when restarting from within windows - when it has been running for a while, and no obvious problems in windows itself.

The system isn't overclocked and I'm sure my ram is running at the auto default voltage for the board. The bios version is F6.

Short of leaving the pc on all the time, any suggestions gratefully received?

Thanks

Bornslippy

You'll probably find that your ram is supposed to run at 2.0 ish volts, usually indicated on a label on the ram, rather than 1.8V, which is the default voltage for most motherboards - i would check this out and adjust accordingly.

***edit - just checked on the web site and it states 2.2 volts for the ram - you will need to cahnge this - once in the bios press ctrl & f1 to open up some more tweaking options, specifically around ram timings..change from auto and increase to +0.4v

I'm running on 2.0 volts at present and it hasn't made any difference to booting up from cold...Have also tightened my ram timings to what they should be 4-4-4-12.

Not sure what to try next, any ideas?

This cold boot issue has been around forever, and for some reason nobody knows how to fix it.

One thing i did when i had the same issue is to see if putting the RAM side by side (e.g. non dual channel) helps. If so then something is probably wrong with one of the ram sockets, a problem i had.

Hmm i thought i was the only one with this exact problem.
Anyone found out anything new yet as this is driving me nuts?

I have contacted gigabyte and again but have not had a reply over the weekend.
Bornslippy, how long did your RMA take?

Well I was still in warranty and I RMA'd via the supplier rather the manufacturer. It didn't take too long, but I couldn't tell exactly what I got back but it works fine.

I tried everything, including 2.2v to no avail.
