I just had a blatent scam call from somebody claiming to be a Microsoft technician. Nothing better to do this morning so has some fun with them. :D

They did the usual like ask me to boot up my computer and time how long it took. I said 5 seconds. She sounded suprised and asked about my computer which explained was a Hex Core i7 with a multi SSD's in Raid 0 etc etc. I also managed to throw it in there that I was a software developer.

Anyway not deterred by this in the slightest she explained how I had malicious software that I had got from clicking a pop-up. I ever so sarcastically explained how suprised I was that my internet security, antivirus, firewalls etc had not protected me from this! I obviously know nothing as apparently this is some kind of different malware that is not picked up by any of this.

I then put her on hold for 10 mins to weatch tele while I got my "brother" to help, which was just me again with a stupid accent.

Still not deterred she took "my brother" to the windows application error logs, where the errors were "proof" of the damage this malware was causing. I was getting bored now so called BS on this to see what response I got.

She said if I was the expert maybe I could correct her, so I did, in great detail. Then I had a rant about what I though of her and what she was up to and it kind of went downhill from there. :p

I kind of wished I played along a bit more to find out what their "solution" was. I did some googling and it turns out to be a download from a website that allows them to remote on, get you passwords, bank details etc, and generally **** up your computer.

Anyway thought I would share. Have any other geeks played along to these virus / malware calls? It's quite fun.

I just swear at them and put the phone down.

Or...

I go "sure, i'll just get him" when they say "can I speak to mr xxxx" and put the phone to one side whilst continuing with whatever i was doing previously.

Nothing to do with computers, but had a call from "BT" at work on a saturday. Got passed along, all along to me in the end. Basically said we were in arrears and we would be cut off. I 99% believed it was a scam.

But she was very confident and tapping away on a make believe keyboard and giving me invoice and account numbers. Called accounts and anyone I could reach, but being a saturday no one can check anything as they are not in the office.

Because we weren't in a position check anything and weren't sure of anything, had to weigh up the risk of it being a scam vs actually having our phone lines/fax lines cut off over the weekend.

After about 40 minutes of arguing and deciding what to do, was decided to pay the amount. (She even overheard me talking to my cousin on my mobile saying I thought it was bs)

Soon as we passed over the details it went dead. So I had to phone up the bank and cancel the card and what not. Someone tried to use it to pay for a travelodge room almost straight away.

Think I aged a few years in those 40 minutes.

Funny thing was which no one seemed to know or realise at the time was our phone lines arent even with BT.

Oh well, wiser now.

got this call earlier and i said to them it sounds like a scam and they told me to **** off lol, number withheld too so don't know the number.

Did you report them, so they can't scam people that will fall for it?

Has anyone tried following their instructions of going into the event viewer and then saying that there are no errors listed?

I'd love to get one of these calls, thus far, I've only had the Lib Dems on the phone today which is probably worse! :D

One of these ****s phoned our house and my mom answered, the woman kept saying how "your" computer didn't have the latest Microsoft update and was thus vulnerable.

She said that she doubts it because I would have made sure they have the update if it was true. I got put on the phone and listened to the BS for around a minute before telling her I thought she was scum and should get a job.
