I'm sure I've see this before but I can't remember what the culprit is.

I hit power, the fans spin up, drives (I think...) spin up etc but nothing else occurs, just sits on a black screen.

If I immediately power off/on it's 50/50 if it will properly fire up. If I give it 30 seconds it's no issue on the second try.

It's probably either a drive being too slow to spin up or possibly something on the mainboard? Anyone any clues?

Thinking on, I do have a diags display on the mainboard, will check what that's showing :)

Board is an asrock z68 extreme... something... 5 I think, power supply is an x-series 1250w.

I would check your voltages with a multimeter, don't rely on software readings. You won't no more than 5% than the specified voltage, ie: 5v should be between 4.76-5.25v.
