I'm not into the collectibles scene but I doubt GW's stuff is (except maybe for some old 80s miniatures). Maybe something like Ral Partha's stuff might be more collectible, but I wouldn't know. Your best bet is to skim through a few hobbyist magazines or websites.

There are a few people that design, paint and then sell off show pieces based on GW production ranges and make quite a lot of money. Obviously they had to win several painting competitions first.
From what I remember of most models made nowadays their worth more as their base metals then they are once you have opened the packet due to the volumes their made in. But GW is a very good place to start and what you can produce is only limited by your imagination and skill as a modeller/painter.
Oh but your need to take out a second mortgage and sell a couple of the kids off to fund it.

Yep defo take a look at Games Workshop as a starting point. There minature range is mainly metal but there are plastic models as well. You are able to paint these minatures to your own specs.
Unfortuantely I think there range is expensive which is why I stopped collecting them a few years ago but nevertheless it was a hobby which I enjoyed. A shame the prices continued to rise to be honest.

Do Warhammer books and figures have any 2nd hand value? Got a pile of 40k stuff

Yes they do. A lot of people sell there minatures on Ebay as well as those Games Workshop events they do.
I couldn't give an estimate myself it would depend on how many points your army is worth I suppose and whether there painted, unpainted, still in the box etc.

Books before WFB 4th ed and WH40k 2nd ed. can sell very well on ebay - I've seen a copy of Realms of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness go for £200 and the auction hadn't even ended at that point. No idea about miniatures. AFAIK you can call GW mail order and ask them to recast any of their back-catalogue models, in which case the price of used models can't be very high, but I'm not sure if that's still the case (I last ordered stuff from them around 10 years ago)...
EDIT: I think it was The Lost and the Damned, not Slaves to Darkness, actually...

I only ask as I gave a friend a load of orcs/elder minatures yesterday*, and almost gave him my old (1990) Waaargh the Orcs, and Ere we go books (both hardback in pretty good nick).
I only kept the books as I sometimes enjoy browsing through them
*Pretty much all the ones you had to buy seperately in about 98-99 to get a reasonably good standard army (all unpainted), and a harliquen task force

Yeah I'm pretty sure those are 1st ed Werewolf. 2nd ed was the first one to come in a boxed set with WH40k on the cover - 1st ed was basically Rogue Trader

Another games shop that specialises in everything else that isn't warhammer thats in Castle arcade (the arcade that is almost infront of the castle gates on duke street).
Warhammer is expensive but you could start by buying a starter pack (game board) and building off that.
When I was younger I did the warhammer thing but its costly. It depends what minatures you want you can get anything from napoleonic battles with 10000s of the things to Roman armys etc. I still have a mix of allsorts, warhammer, Roman minatures etc I use to use years ago.
Reading use to hold a minature convention thing years ago as well with everything under one roof.
