I'm considering studying for an MSc in Operational Research or something similar as I've been using R for discrete event simulation at work which I find interesting - does anyone have any suggestions?

Perhaps look at stats and machine learning courses too. There is rather a lot of online material out there for you to take a look at before committing to doing a full on MSc yourself - CMU has some good stuff:

maybe take a look at their optimisation course (useful whether you go for an OR MSc or ML/Stats):

Thanks! I probably should have mentioned that I will be taking optimisation, and deterministic & stochastic dynamics as part of my degree (Maths & Physics). I will definitely look through those links when on a PC.

I'm studying part time with the Open University which I'll finish in three years, I wish I'd chosen stats instead of physics as part of my degree but I had one eye on a job at the MET Office when starting it.

I'm picking up various stats skills through work but I think structured learning would better serve me in fully understanding the fundamentals and limitations of modelling etc.

ah in that case perhaps concentrate on that first - the links re: optimisation will likely go a bit further than your undergrad module but I'd wait till after you've finished before tackling say the CMU course or the Boyd courses on the SEE website

Cheers, perhaps I'll save those for when I've finished my third year maths modules and have nothing to learn over the summer break.

Dredging this thread up as I never did start a Uni 2016/2017 thread - way to busy for that!

So how's everyone doing? Is anyone applying now or starting a degree next year?

I'm in my final year and I have my last exam tomorrow but it's only a small 30%er and I'm finished! On course for a first (93% average) but I still have by double credit dissertation to be marked and a couple of 50% assignments, but I think I'm good. I also passed my PGCE assessment day and got confirmation this morning for a place starting in September - exciting!

Looking past PGCE next year, I have two offers on the table for post grad study - one from UCLAN for a funded PhD in CCI (Child Computer Interaction) and a funded combined Masters/PhD at Lancaster in HCI. Need to take some time to weight up the benefits of each program - don't need to give them an answer until December so a while to decide yet.

3 exams left over the next 2 weeks then 5 years done!

Now that you are through the mill of GCSE's my lad is due to start his in a year or so. What tips would you give to revision? How long to start beforehand, any useful websites etc.

I'm not ashamed to admit that completely bollocksed my GCSEs and had to revisit them later in life (recently finished a BSc(Hons)!). So any advice would be truly appreciated.

Just got my dissertation result - 91% - that's a 1st class degree in the bag with an 89% final mark for the degree

Really wanted to break the 90% barrier, but I had a migraine on my last exam so only answered one of the two questions - got 88% on that question but it was only worth 60% of the exam

Woop - just got the "official" call from my tutor - pass list is in from Lancaster and I passed with a first!

So that's a First Class BSc (Hons) in Interactive Media Development.

Roll on graduation on Thursday and PGCE in September.

Got my results yesterday morning - first-class Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering + Diploma in Industrial Studies... chuffed to say the least!

Does anyone here know how I can check if university courses from abroad is accepted here? As I've applied for various courses at university back home in Sweden to do part time distance learning (as I don't need to pay tuition fees back home even if I live in UK). I just need to see if they are valid here in UK as well afterwards.

Edit: And is there some way I can look for a set course at universities in the UK? I'm very interested to start with jsut doing a course in Anathomy & Physiology but find it a jungle to find where to look and how.

I'm not sure what exactly you're asking - are you talking about an undergraduate degree being suitable for post graduate study or individual modules being eligible for credit transfer? I think in either case it is going to depend on the UK course and the course director. (University modules across Europe are standardised by equivalent amounts of credits etc.. to allow for the possibility of transfer but that doesn't mean that a particular course will allow it)

dowie, I'm more talking about the second part, individual modules that could be eligible for a credit transfer or would be recognized in the UK as well. I've applied for various modules (we call them courses though) in psychology, English and exercise physiology.

The main reason I'm asking is to see if they would be recognized in the UK so I could use them at uni for other qualifications or when applying for other modules/courses and also that they would be useful on a CV.
As if there is a main governance board I could turn to to see if the module would be accepted or eligible for a credit transfer.

And also in Sweden there is a website that will list all the university courses and programs (undergrad, post-grad , masters etc) for the entire country on one site. So you could search for any kind of education and find exactly which uni teaches that specific course etc. Is there a site here in the UK that would be offering the same services?

I'm half way through my PGCE.

Teaching side of things is going really well.

The PGCE side of things not so much... I'm behind on all my work due to the work load from the teaching. I am trying to catch up but they just keep piling more on!

I knew it would be hard... I just have to persevere!

I actually finished my PGCE and have qualified with a full PGCE with QTS. Graded as Outstanding too. Very happy chappy
