College/University Thread

Finished my maths degree at Warwick earlier this year, now about to start a masters in Sheffield studying control systems engineering, very much looking forward to it! Can't wait to get a project underway and have a fiddle with code, circuitry and robots :D Secured two scholarships too which I'm stoked about, one from the royal aeronautical society/big aerospace companies, another from the university just because I live in a poor area.

starting back in a week for year two of medical imaging degree. and I really am a mature (born in 1971) student! loving it so far, hard work but worth it.

Endless problems with student finance, wrong tuition fees, sent in about 10 different forms to try and get it changed. Every time i ring their system is "down for maintenance", had the same issue last year. A total shamble by Student Finance Wales.

Am i just better off making a complaint?

So far been turned down by 4/5 uni's (waiting on 1) without an interview - my grades aren't good enough and it's too competitive.

They want grade B in English and Maths before applying for Physiotherapy so even if I get it this year it won't count as I only have a grade C and waiting on results from Maths but got grade A in English.

So far college is tough, annoying and frustrating me but I don't think I'm doing rubbish - it's unlikely but possible i'll get the distinctions I need - 36.

Currently got 9 distinctions, 6 merits, 3 passes. Think there's 27 left - need distinctions in all.

I'm having a change of feeling about the actual course I want go into now though and feeling Occupational Therapy might suit my needs and wants better.

Got to change now - happy birthday lol

Have no idea 'if' or 'where' I will be in 6 months....

I like an open life but this is ridiculous...

So, how's everyone doing, we must be getting into results time now?

I had my last assignment mark in today and my year average is 93% which I'm pretty chuffed with. Not quite matching the 97% I got last year but this year has been much more intense - anything above 70% gets me a distinction.

So that's the Foundation Degree done and dusted so I'll be getting an FdSc Interactive Media Development with Distinction when I graduate a month today - looking forward to that as my folks are attending as my guests, then it's onto September for the full BSc (Hons) top up year, then a PGCE (1yr) after that and a Phd in Child Computer Interaction after that.

I also start lecturing in September - it's only 16hrs a week but I'm pretty nervous about it - plenty of stuff to do over the summer as I'm redeveloping some of their teaching/course material for some of the modules I did this year

So come on, time to give yourselves a well deserved pat on the back and tell everyone else how you've done.

Congrats!!

I had to defer my absolute final exam for my course due to the arrival of child no.2 happening a month early, so will be graduating with an ordinary degree and taking the exam late July to get full honours. My course is Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering BEng.

Slightly frustrating, but at least my grade won't be capped for that module due to extenuating circumstances. Also I totally fell out of love with my final project about a third the way through, and was expecting ~60. Grades back today and got 75, so am quite happy with that tbh!

I'll be finishing up with a very comfortable first. It was easy and almost a formality really. Not sure what I'll do next though, but that depends on level of CBA, progression at work and sponsorship, and family commitments. Also I need to get my man cave built and have numerous celebratory beers.

Well done all. I'm still working towards uni in September having been turned down by all my choices so need to go through clearing and look at another course as my grades won't be good enough anyway but I had a 2nd choice in mind when I picked the course and went for the hardest choice.

So we'll see what happens in September.... Time for a job hunt next week....

Exam today.... Hopefully I got distinction... Think I did well but I'm never sure... Think I screwed some things up....

I've been in industry a while now, but I'm coming to accepting a PhD at Advanced combustion and fuels research team at Brunel University!

It's a considerable income cut, but I really don't enjoy dealing with the politics and issues of "Automotive engineering" !
Really looking forward to solid research and development :)

Well my second semester (year 1) of my Mech Eng will be a mixed bag. Got 95% for my applied thermodynamics coursework and 93% for my digital design (CAD stuff), but my exams I had in May I'm not feeling great about. Just hoping I've done enough to pass so I can move on to next year, but they aren't going to be great scores I know that :p

how much of each module does your coursework mark count for?

If you mean me, then I think my thermo was split 50/50 weight between the coursework and the exam. (off the top of my head).

My CAD stuff doesn't have an exam so that's all good really.

My other exam was a combination of Maths and Dynamics, which was 100% of that module. No coursework or anything for that.

So I ended up with 24 x Distinctions, 15 x Merit and 6 x pass after a 30 week Access to HE course. Not brilliant but not completely crap.... really impressed with myself getting that with zero support from anyone, having a house to maintain etc and being hindered by useless bloody teenage students! Needed 36 Distinctions but I didn't get a grade B in maths anyway so it was a mute point- took it 3x and got 3x C! Grrrr!!! lol.

Has anybody ever had experience of going through clearing and can advise please?

Got to look into a different area now to get into uni....

Have you considered doing a year at the Open University? You could transfer after a year to a real uni with zero issues. This solves your grade issues to a degree.

They don't do Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy courses. Otherwise I'd never heard of that and it sounded like a good plan so thank you for the insight.

perhaps you could do some science based courses over the course of a year - wouldn't let you jump into second year of a physio course but might help give you a second chance at getting in the door.

Speak to admissions tutors - in some circumstances the OU could well be more useful than access courses - certainly for less specialist subjects it could let you skip a year or bank some credits.

Can't see why not.

There's what used to be called a 2+2 scheme for sciences at least: two years with the OU, then onto year 2 at a brick uni. The partnered courses and said brick unis vary, but they aren't at all shabby.

Nothing specifically re physiotherapy, but a route via Bio/Chemistry might be possible. Ask around.
