Hey guys, im looking into going to college to study software development as I left school with pretty crappy grades. I meet all the requirements to attend the course except one. Does anyone know how strict the requirements are. I have written a letter trying to explain that even though I do not have maths at a grade c I feel I can still do the course. Do you think theres a possibility that would work?

heres my letter.

Hello,
I am writing this letter in the hope that I might be accepted into the
BTEC National Diploma IT Practitioners Software Development cause.

I currently meet all the entry requirements except one. I do not have a
GCSE grade 'C' in maths, I currently have grade 'E'.

After reading what the course entails I feel that I would be able to complete the course
as I have been independantly studying most of the subjects covered for a few years now.

I have a great interst in most things to do with computers and I am well versed in all areas
from software programming, web programming to computer hardware, here are a few
languages I am most familiar with.

HTML, PHP, MySQL, C++, Pascal (studied for 1yr at 6th form)
I am also competent in Windows and Linux.

I would make every effort to meet the course requirements If i could be accepted.
I am currently looking into re-taking maths.

I am worried that without the neccessary qualifications I will not be able to move
forward or gain employment in my chosen field.

Regards,
Joe.

Sometimes they let you off if you're a few marks off a C or if the rest of your grades are way above C.

They'll probably still let you in but they'll probably make you learn and retake your Maths GCSE while you do the BTEC.

Though i can't say, i guess every college is different.

Usually will just depend on the co-ordinator of the course. And also if there is a lot of people applying, and they all have better grades than you, you might be rejected.

I know for my college course, two of the guys who got onto my VCE hadn't got half of the entry requirements, they didn't do too badly, but still got less than D's in the end, but they were pretty useless.

Good luck anyway.

Letter seems fine I think, though I'd change "I am also competent in Windows and Linux." to something like "I am also a competent Windows and Linux user", as otherwise it sounds like you're calling Windows and Linux languages. Maybe I'm being a bit anal though.

ok, hopefully then :)

Do you think my letters ok? Im carp at writing letters.

Could be a bit more formal - maybe don't start with hello, use your full name at the end.

tbh I'm carp at writing letters too lol.

I agree, I also thought that.

Should be course.

i had a D for maths when i went to college and it was a C required for most of my courses, they let me do them all and said i had to do a fast tracked maths course to get a C for maths ( 10 weeks, one lessons a week )
