Hi, anybody know the cheapest place to colocate a 1U Server ? Best offer I can find is with 49pence at £39+VAT per month ?

Also is there anywhere that will colocate a normal PC cased server ?

Thanks.

All I can really say is "best != cheapest" :).

Lots of companies will accept a server in a non-rackmount case but it will be less cost effective long term. You'll also have to be very careful to ensure sufficient airflow through the chassis.

That's £69/month if he wants to pay monthly and only has 512MB of RAM which won't go very far. However I do agree that, unless you have very specific hardware requirements, dedicated is far better than co-lo.

A lot of customers go into co-lo thinking it will save them money. They buy a used server from eBay for £250, stick it in the cheapest possible co-lo and cross their fingers. The problem arises when that machine fails. The hosting company have no spares for that model of server and charge you £100/hour for remote hands time. Very soon you end up with a very large bill and a week of downtime for your company mail server, web hosting box, game server, whatever you are hosting.

With a dedicated box, the hosting company will (or rather should) have a plentiful supply of spares on site. They're familiar with the hardware and, in the event of a failure, should be able to have you up and running again in a couple of hours at most. Choose the right company and the monthly cost won't be much higher than co-lo, shipping your server, depreciation on the server whilst in co-lo and the inevitable remote hands time required.

a1isp has some good co-lo deals but I don't think you can get any cheaper than 49 pence given the electricity price hikes. At £39 they will be barely making ends meet...presumably making money on extras.

I think most hosts will be reluctant to take tower/desktop pcs as they take up so much space (5u) and look unsightly.

I know a place thats good.. In london

His prices are

1U
0.5amp off power or slightly over
500gb really good bandwith!
for £45 per month

got a couple of co lo servers with globalgold, around £50-60 per month iirc.

oneandone internet have some good dedicated offerings, although the datacentre is in germany, 123-reg are also pretty reasonable.

if you really want to keep the costs down you could always consider a vps account, basically you get a vmware type setup to do as you wish, from around £20 a month.

of course it all depends what your planning on using it for?
