I'm wanting to colocate a server in the UK

i currently have 2 1u servers rented from lease web in Amsterdam for my team fortress 2 clan/club and costs a small fortune and chews up 3TB of b/w a month

now what sort of servers can i run om 0.5 amp of power ans 1 amp of power

i cant see how i can calculate this in terms of maximum spec of server i could run on it

i was thinking along the lines of the quad core yorkfield with 4gb of ram

I'm sure there must be some people that work in datacentres in this forum that can put me in the picture :)

The dell site has a power calculation tool. You choose one of their base servers, cpu, ram, disks etc. and it tells you what amps is drawn.

The Dell R300 is just out. This has the newer quads but the R200 has just dropped in price and so you could balance out cost savings for that against higher co-lo prices.

p=iv
so
i=p/v

Amps = Power/Voltage
so if in UK (240v)

so for a 500W PSU
500(watts)/240(volts in uk) = 2.08333 Amps

And a 250W PSU
250(watts)/240(volts in uk) = 1.04166 Amps

(of course a 500W PSU may peak at 500W when powering on, but settle at 250W depending on hardware)

//TrX

That assumes 100% efficiency but the best you'll get is around 80% so you need to multiply your figures by at least 1.25.
