Colocation Providers

How much space are you taking?

The answer to that will depend on whether you speak to a datacentre owner (i.e. Telecity Group, Equinix, etc) or whether you go to a reseller...

Resellers are fine. I'm only looking at a full rack or two.

What area? London has plenty of choices but is expensive and power can be limited. There are a lot of options around the country with Manchester especially strong.
The main players are Equinix, Telecity, Telehouse and then companies like Iomart, LDex, Blue Square, Icecolo etc.
You also need to factor in how much power you need and the type of bandwidth. Some colo providers charge a premium for bandwidth and others are carrier neutral. You can get stung on cross connect prices as well.

We can offer ;) We have our own fully owned Tier-3 Data Centre in South Wales with a link down to THN.

We have a lot of racks in about 5 DCs currently, possibly more soon and all are from different providers. Are you bothered about location? The best of our 5 so far is an Equinix one in Slough (LD5) probably followed by GS1/GS2 over in Docklands but of course depends where you want it.

One of our clients has about 4 racks in a DC near Southampton, it isn't massive but it's OK, so there are options outside the belt

A friend of mine works for Redstation, they're based in the South and do co-lo.

We have 3 DC locations:

Telehouse/Docklands
Equinix/Slough
SSE/Segensworth

Indeed. Modern facility, good access, clean, bright, neat etc. etc. Handy having the deboxing room close to our cage too :p

Colo 2, one of the cages to the right just after the debox room? I'll watch out for you </stalker>.

We've just taken a 16 rack cage (expanding to 24) in Colo 3 (new phase).

Stalker

Just off round to the right off the second (iirc) gangway. 6 rack cage. Our other DCs we haven't got cages in, just about half dozen racks in each. Got 6 in Greenwich BIS which is a pain as 3 are one end of the row, and 3 at the other ¬______¬". HEX, GS1, GS2 and Brahm Street are all OK as they are near each other

I'd still recommend LD5 even though I have to get there via the M25 from Bromley :(

I`ve just spent most of last night in LD4, not been to LD5 yet but have lots of customers in there that Equinix kindly connect to from our cage in LD4.

All nighters suck - record for me is 36 hours straight :p

When I worked for Level 3 I spent 3 days solid in Braham St when a cooling pipe burst and took out a couple of 6509s. Had to replace the kit in a new area and rerun about 200 patches. That coincided with a major upgrade already planned elsewhere in the building so I stayed onsite for about 70 hours.

We had a few servers at goswell road but i think that has recently closed and moved to a new building, i think with c4l.

Actually i was wrong it was with a company called ICM at old street which was recently bought by a company called Phoenix and moved to wapping.

@ pdw8 - Ouch. A company we're buying soon is in Braham Street (London presence, they are an ISP). never been in the DC yet though, were running 10Gb fibre through there soon though as part of our GeoIP ring so might might have to pop along and have a look

@ groen - Yeah I know ICM/Phoenix, they have presence over in Slough too i think? Not in LD5 but a building that way...

@ Burnsy - One of our other clients has a DC in Fareham, is Redstation the one near the lake/Golf course? If so I know the one. Pokey little conversion place
