The US strikes again!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40353408

Teachers are being trained to carry guns in classrooms in Colorado in order to protect children as part of a scheme motivated by a school massacre in 2012.

The three-day course, which consists of firearms and medical training, was launched on Tuesday in Weld County.

Seventeen members of staff who "would like to be considered armed first responders" have so far taken part.

The pilot programme will allow volunteers to enter schools with guns under US "concealed carry" laws.

Now i have no problem against armed security... with real training. Not local volunteers and teachers who want a 3 day course so that they can be the next hero that shoots down the next gun nut that decides to shoot their school up.

With a gun in the classroom, the ultimate temptation would be to be the student that nicks it.

well I'm not sure there is a major issue in itself with firearms being present in schools or teachers having access to firearms... there are plenty of schools in this country where teachers have access to firearms and pupils are taught to shoot them on school premises

it is the idea of a teacher, with 3 days training, potentially turning into a have a go hero and confronting an armed attacker - that is worrying, they're not a substitute for police officers and could easily cause more harm than they prevent

I'm not sure why people have issues with responsible people being armed and allowing them to potentially be able to prevent a school shooting. You cannot logically argue this is a bad thing, I understand that it's not a nice situation for teachers to HAVE to be armed, but the teachers being armed isn't the problem.

It is not logical to arm a teacher after 3 days of training.

It is not logical to search out volunteers to do this job over trained professionals. By doing it this way you are putting guns in the hands of people who fancy themselves to be the next guy to shoot down the nutcase. You dont want these sort of volunteers.

If a school is that dangerous, then there should be armed professionals dedicated to the job. Equipping teachers is just stupid because some kids are just stupid enough to be tempted to try and take it.

...and this is why American is stupid.
No, I don't feel I need to quantify or qualify that further.
American and ALL of their rules on guns are so stupid compared to nearly every other "sane" country in the world.

"So, how do we tackle the problem of guns in a school".
"Ummm, by bringing in 50+ of our own?"
"Sounds good"

Because by arming teachers you are bringing in more guns to the school.
I do worry when people outside of the USA don't grasp the concept that the way to solve gun problems is not with more guns.

Put it this way.

Who here can think of any teacher that they met in their youth that they would not trust with a gun, be it due to incompetence, personality issues, mental issues or whatever.

Now i assume that if you are cleared to mould the youth of today into tomorrows adults, then the state cant really argue against you protecting them with a gun.

I can certainly think of a handful of teachers i would not have trusted to possess a weapon even if tehy had all the best intentions in the world.
