Colour Gamut

Can anyone explain to me what this colour gaumet thing is please?

I see this specification pop up all over the place but I'm not 100% what it actually means?

Is it a new marketing hype thing or is it something you can actually notice in use?

in the case of the Dell 2408 wide gamut monitor, you'll need a colorimeter to properly tame the over-cooked out-of-the-box colours to be anywhere near accurate.

Over-cooked, yeah I like that expression, pretty much hit the nail on the head!
