Colour Temperature Calibration

Noob question, but are there any reasonably accessible ways of recalibrating a TFT in terms of attempting to reproduce accurate colours. I've messed around with them, but haven't been able to find a setting I'm really happy with.

My Dell 2407 WPF should be arriving at some point next week, so it's calibrating in that context that I'm really interested.

software calibration can only do so much sadly, main thing is getting it looking how YOU want it to look and it's normally easy enough to get some nice and vibrant colours from a TFT. If you need to get accurate colour reproduction for a reason then you'd need to invest in a hardware calibration tool like the Gretag Macbeth Eye-One 2, or Lacie Blue Eye Pro for instance, but at £160 - 250 range, it doesnt come cheap

Cheers for that - at those sort of prices, I'm willing to experiment a bit more. Any recommendations for software based calibration tools?

Monitor Calibration Wizard does a good enough job software wise, like i say,. it's easy enough to get it looking how you like

Ask yourself if you really need it. Or to put it another way, is whatever you want an accurately calibrated monitor for likely to be seen by the intended viewer on an uncalibrated monitor?

If the answer is yes, software is your best bet for now. Hardware would be a step too far.

we use these guys for calibration on all our kit, there very good, and have loads of advice on there site

I have the Avia DVD and the colour filters, I guess you can use this? Display 100% pure colours. Although isn't colour temperature greyscale, which can only be adjusted with a optical device?

I settle for 90-95 % colour accuracy when it comes to calibrating a lcd without a spyder etc: I calibrate in rgb mode for artwork and use rgb in photoshop. Once finished my work I reset the monitor to custom-just the way I like it (for dvd etc)
