This has to be a well known problem in the world of computer graphics that TFTs display brighter colours than a CRT.. so there must be a fix.

Now that i have a TFT and CRT i can see side by side the difference, and i dont like it when my vibrant website looks subdued because of how its being viewed.

I hope theres some quick answer, i imagine i need to limit my palette of colours to some sort of screen safe tones?

It's unfortunate, but most TFTs simply do not give an accurate representation of colours and colour saturation compared to CRTs. I really don't think there's a work around, other than to check your website on several different monitors. :/

People using a monitor will be quite used to the contrast, vibrancy and brightness of it, be it CRT or TFT. There's little point trying to get perfect colour matching for a website when the output devices (monitors) are so incredibly variable. I can't really see how there can be a 'fix' for this.

You can quite easily adjust the contrast, brightess and RGB levels on a TFT, just as you can a CRT. Just calibrate the monitor you work on correctly, and ensure contrast between text and the background is sensible.
