When a client purchased new premises earlier this year there was a wireless access point mounted high up on one of the walls. Today I was finally able to get it down and see what it was.

It's a Colubris MultiService Wireless Access Point MAP-320R. I wondering if it's worth trying to get it working? I'd need to get hold of a PoE injector before I can even power it up.

Thanks.

Having had chance to check the specs I'm of the same opinion. I'll chuck it on the spares pile with the rest of the junk. Given the age and the weight it's not even worth trying to give it away.

Except this needs a PoE injector purchasing for it and it's not known whether it even works or not at the moment. There's no point investing time and money and ending up with a single 54Mbps access point.

That's all well and good, but your post was implying the main reason to get rid was due to only being 802.11g, which is senseless.

That is still my position really. Unless the only thing you're using them for is web traffic (like your guest Wi-Fi example) and you have a relatively decent number of APs per client then 54Mbps is going to be a pretty painful experience.

I dunno, I think people limit their usage of Wi-Fi based on previous experiences with it, which in turn means they have lower requirements when the time comes for investment. There's no reason that you can't support laptop users shifting files around at a decent speed and with excellent coverage, but it's not going to happen by shoving a freebie router in a corner next to a bin.
