I have searched for this, but to no avail.

How can I get a window displayed(i.e. Finder) in column mode, to remember the new width of the columns once I've altered them?

Ive not found a way to remember different widths in column view, but i found a couple of tips:

-double click the || symbol under the arrows in column view and it will resize it quickly to the longest filename.

-mouseover filenames and the full filename will pop up after a short delay. to see the popup instantly, press the option key when moused over.

After some research, I think I've found how to resize individually, but only in open/save windows, not finder.

Ctr+click on the || symbol gives a mini menu allowing to set columns individually.
