I bought a used COM 2000 for my 307 for £30 from someone on a Peugeot forum. He posts a lot and is one of the 'experts' there. He lists them on eBay quite regularly it seems. He has a good feedback rating.

After discussing about my faulty unit with him in a thread, (left indicator stalk was the main problem) he later linked one of his ebay listings in the thread and I bought from that.

I received it, checked it over, identical and all very good condition. Anyway, the garage rang me today to say the replacement has 4 connectors and my old one has 5. They've put the replacement on and told me everything works, but the missing connector is for the airbag. So there's no working airbag now and the dash light is on.

So I'm going to have to pay the garage £120 for the work they've done, and they're putting the old one back on. Obviously this guy is going to have to refund me or replace it, but either way, I don't know how I stand with the cost of returning it. I shouldn't have to pay for the cost of returning it.

More than that, he's effectively cost me money in wasted garage work and I will have to pay again when I get the correct part. He told me to ignore all eBay compatability guides.
Before I bought it, he said "Do yourself a favour IGNORE the ebay compatibility guide it is compiled by the idiots at ebay towers they DO NOT have any knowledge of cars i sell on ebay and i deliberately do NOT include the compatibility rubbish on my listings.
You are best just to fit the whole unit as you can get a good used 1 for the same price as just a stalk !

Here is 1 of my listings.. "

He was confident it would be the correct unit before I bought it. How should I deal with this?

Probably chalk it down to experience and move on. Does the forum have any buying/selling rules etc? Was it a paypal gift or proper purchase?

I guess there must be some forum rules, but I didn't find them in any sticky yet.

It was a proper PayPal purchase. But it seems quite difficult to get the correct com 2000 unit, seems to be variations. Hopefully he'll sort me out with another one. But since he was so confident about the one he sent me and said to ignore compatibility guides, doesn't that make him liable for some costs, at the very least to send me the correct unit for free?

All working now. Turns out the airbag connector on the steering wheel itself was loose, now tightened. Was nothing to do with the com 2000 unit. It seems the extra connector on my old unit was for ESP. So the seller, who confidently told me mine wouldn't have ESP, sold me the wrong unit. Still, it's all working other than that. I guess I just won't have ESP kick in if it's needed.
