I came across this video on the net and its triggered some interest in a flight sim. Can any one please recommend me something? Requirements:

- Modern air combat (well atleast jet engine'd planes).
- Interesting missions against all types of targets (air, land, sea even (?) ).
- Not essential that I have a joystick. I may get one in the future should I find games to justify. ^^

Thanks for reading. :)

LOMAC (or the other one, but I'm a LOMAC fanboy :D )

"Not essential that I have a joystick"??? Isn't that, erm, a little odd?

Yup. :(
Im hoping I could get by with a keyboard and mouse in the short term. But I realise a joystick is pretty much essential for flight sims. Any recommendations on joysticks also?

I use the Saitek Cyborg Evo Force Joystick.

I hear a lot of good things about the Saitek X52. I would grab one but I throw all my money into flying. :D

Nice video, great propaganda for the Eurofighter, what is the background of this video, the direct URL please. Nice though, footage seems to borrow a lot from the movie "Behind enemy lines"

If you want to get into Flight Sim, then try an undemanding sim first, even the old Eurofighter sims that still work under Windows? Or F22 or ADF ... cheap cheap cheap, for an introduction.

I wouldn't jump into LOMAC as the other enthusiast suggests, You'll either love it or hate it, chances are ... it might put you off Flight Sims for good? it can get quite deep. Even from the beginning.

You will need a Joystick (at least) to get the most out of any Flight Sim, a separate or onboard throttle is good, if you get into Flight Sim ... separate Rudder pedals and other goodies can come later.

You cant go far wrong in getting FS2004 or even FS2002, take the lessons in the sim to familiarise yourself with Flight, then try some combat simulation if that's what you really want? online combat Flight Simulation can be quite a blast.

IL2 Pacific Fighters, Falcon 4 Allied Force are the daddies IMHO, but they do require some skill.

My advice, as with anything new in life, is to take it slow and easy.

Good luck.

Do you reckon Lock On Gold is worth getting if ive already got the original ?

Modern flight sims with missiles and such (LOMAC : Lock On) I find are kind of boring, you find yourself just looking at a box on screen and watching a pretty missile fly through the sky.

With WW2 ones its much more different, you have to get up close and personal, use your skill and multiplayer online is great (GREAT COMMUNITY!)

I would get IL2, you will need

IL2 Forgotten Battles

IL2 Expansion pack (Aces I think)

IL2 Pacific fighters

and to play online

Hyperlobby pro. There are a lot of servers! Join the UK dedicated.

The cyborg evo is a great joystick,I have one too!

That's really down to personnal preference. I've found LOMAC is never short for excitement, as long as you know what you are doing.

pegasus1 - No idea. Mine isn't Gold, I presumed it was the same.

If you want modern flying, ignore the IL2 monkeys!

Rather than start a new thread, can anyone recommend a good flight sim based on pre-jet combat? I used to love Flying Corps and would love to play something like that or a ww2 one again

Thanks for all the info guys. Plenty of food for thought! :)

Of the sim's mentioned; which would have the best tutorial for easing me into learning to fly? The most detailed flight I have enjoyed is the jump jets in GTA San Andreas! lol  I would guess that one of the more recent FS200x series games would be best. Am I right in thinking the basic flight principle skills I would learn transfer pretty well to any serious flight sim thats aiming for authenticity?

BTW, ill get a cheap joystick and if after a few weeks Im really having fun, may grab myself the X52.

If you just want to fly, FS2004 is the way to go. It has some nice tutorials I believe and can be picked up pretty cheep. Do a search for the 'tweak' thread too.

Cool sounds good. Ill definetly want to progress to a combat sim though. Idealy one with a strong, mature online multiplayer community. LOMAC appears to fit the bill for this.

Thread dissapeared sometime early this year :(

IL-2/PF has the larger community though ;)

Mind lomac has a steep learning curve, thats why I liked Falcon 4 better as it was easier to get into, as mentioned ms fs will be good to get you up to speed.
