Anyone know anything about the following

we have a glow worm betacom 30c combi boiler

the 40*c red light is flashing which indicates a failed DHW sensor.

Is this something the average man can change.

Our CH is working okay and hot water is hot to warm.

Thank you

Get a carbon monoxide detector either way. There is a home section of the forum for DIY. I've replaced a central pump but I'd not go near the actual boiler unit itself as theres too many possible issues

He's not carrying out chargeable work in a professional capacity, so I'm not sure he has to be.

He doesn't have to be per se but my understanding is he has to be 'competent'. And as far as I'm aware Gas Safe is the only way to measure competence in this country.

Nope, being gas safe is not the definition of competence. The regulations state competent person but they do not state what that is.

So, what standard is there to measure competence against other than gas safe registration?

It’s not hard, just isolate the cold mains, isolate electrical supply, carefully disconnect electrical connections from the DHW sensor, remove DHW using 13 mm spanner (Tao spanner’s work well), fit replacement DHW sensor ensuring washer is correctly fitted like for like, refit electrical connections back to the DHW, restore electrical supply, turn off any open taps, open up cold mains to boiler, check for leaks, if no leaks open up hot water tap whilst checking for leaks.

If you’re not a competent person, it is highly recommended to get a gas safe engineer as the casing will need to be removed and can cause further damage to case seals which can cause dangerous leaks.

Nope, as said that is a thing for paid work. The regs say competant person..... it doesn’t say that means being gas safe registered.
And the gas safe exam is a test for measuring competence. I’m a competent driver, but haven’t got a driving licence. Does that mean I can get in a car and start driving around because I believe I’m competent?

Precisely.

And again, how does one measure competence?

It’s not stated how you would measure competence, only that you have to be competant.

No because what you propose... driving without a license is forbidden by law.

You're really struggling here for some reason.

You agree you must be competent.

There is only one way to legally recognise competence.

I'll ask again, how do you determine someone is competent?

If someone isn’t gas safe tested, the only measure of competence they can use is their own judgement, and that is simply dangerous.

I’m not struggling at all. What you are saying is for paid work, gas safe is for paid work. The regulations say ‘competent person’ they do not state ‘you mus be gas safe registered’.

Getting paid = you must be gas safe registered.

Not getting paid = you must be competent.

What a competent person is, is open to interpretation, you are saying that means being gas safe registered but the regulations do not state that hence you are wrong.

Again, how do you measure competence without the gas safe exam?

Also, you can’t sign off a boiler as safe unless you are gas safe registered, and if he has to remove the casing, that boiler will need thorough testing with the proper equipment. Does he have that?
