Hey everyone,

Moving to a house soon that will need a new boiler.
This is for a family of 4 with showers every night for at least the 2 grown ups and baths now and again.

Should I get a combi boiler like all the green types keep pushing on the home efficiency reports etc? Will I save much off my bills, or should I just get a regular boiler which is likely to be more efficient than the 20+ year old thing currently in place?

Cheers.

A condensing boiler will save money over an older non-condensing type. Combi boilers are just a different and more compact way of heating a house / water, and IMO aren't much better or cheaper to run than a traditional set-up.

Either way, the time for profitable return on the installation of a new boiler is probably in the region of 10+ years, so look to replace it if it is incredibly old (20 years isn't that much) or consistently breaking down - not to save money

Combi for flats or terrace houses yes but families no definitely not, imagine you kids and the wife, on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off boom

On experience of many people with families buying combis when they came out and now regretting the decision.

If you said flat or you and the missus I'd say yes.

Just a side note, we (£1.2bn construction business) won't put combis in anything bigger than a flat, our standard policy says this regardless of what the client (mostly social housing) wants, our re visits and aftercare costs on combis in bigger places has meant we have banned them from all bar flats.

Interesting, what do you recommend for a family then? Not knowing too much about these meant I thought every boiler installed was a combi boiler these days.
