Either I'm missing something, or combi ladders as I understand them have been almost entirely replaced by those daft folding ladders that seem to have zero practical use. So, can anyone help me find one of the 'normal' combi ladders?

What I'm talking about here is the type of ladder with that classic A-frame structure for flat ground, but that also allows you to slide the other half of the ladder for an long extension or to make the A-frame work for use on stairs, etc.

A quick trawl of my local DIY stores, admittedly whilst incredibly hungover, resulted in stepladders or folding ladders but nothing like I was envisaging... they do exist, don't they?

Have you tried googling "Multi purpose ladders" I had a lot of hit's but not sure what you are really after. I have the step ladder ones that just open up.

Gave that a go and got much the same results as I've already had. Mainly those useless folding ladders!

If you skip the first result the next few are the type I think you're looking for

Alas, no - not quite. Close though!

try searching 3 in 1 ladders these may be what your after
Yes! That's exactly it - just like this.

Thats exactly what I'm looking to avoid - useless bloody things. How are you supposed to unfurl the ladder to its full height in a confined space?!

Lol. I bought a screwfix one on offer 3.4M for £60 a week or two ago.

Doing the hallway now and having that exact issue, hurling a half folded ladder up the stairs is hard work! Especially when you hit the ceiling and have to go sideways.

Hah - been there, done that, sold it to some poor sod on Gumtree!

I don't see why they have become so ubiquitous - there's an obvious design flaw which stops them being useful in most situations where you'd actually need a ladder. Sure, they are fine in open spaces but for anything else they are a massive PITA.

Wouldn't say they're that bad, but yes need to think before you move it. Serves as a great platform for working on ceilings etc, so definitely think it has a place!

The one thing that annoys me is the opposing hinges, which makes folding/unfolding it past half way interesting...
