Combining Personal and Work Phone

I've been at the same employer for the last 15 years, and they've always provided me with a mobile phone and separate number.

I'll be leaving the company at the end of the year for a new job which requires travel to Europe every week. Instead of providing me with a phone, they provide a £60 month allowance for me to procure my own contract and device.

I'm considering combining my personal phone (Pixel 7 Pro on Smarty) with an eSim for my work number. A few questions...
  • O2 look like they provide the best European roaming package from the traditional network providers, is it simple to get an eSim from them?
  • From what I've read, I should be able to switch off my eSim when I'm on holiday so I can switch off from work?
  • How can I separate photos taken for work from personal photos?

My previous employer did the eSim thing on personal phones if you wanted a work mobile number - it worked well as you can set particular numbers to use particular SIM cards and the phone display said which SIM was in use. My current employer provides a phone and allows you to use it as a personal device which I don't and this means having to carry about 2 phones on the rare occassions I'm out of the house for work.

Not sure about roaming but Lebara is 30GB (who I'm with personally) and O2 is 25GB.

You can turn off your eSIM and will no longer be able to use the SIM as if your phone is off - it's what I did recently with a travel eSIM, turned off my personal SIM and used it for data with no issues.

Separating photos would have to be manual on the device, perhaps have a work album or something but there's no way to 100% separate.

The only caveat here is that if they want to use a device management profile then I wouldn't let them install it on your own device and I'd get another one.

you'll likely have to install intune or some other management tools, wouldnt be installing that on my own personal phone tbh
One of my colleagues uses her personal iPhone for work. I think she has a work profile setup, for the mandatory MFA, Outlook and Teams applications. I'm not sure I'd do it personally, but I guess it stops carrying around two phones.

If I need my work phone and I’m on call I’ll just forward calls to my personal phone so I’m not carrying both with me. My work provides one that’s encrypted and has its own vpn so I can’t have any apps on my own phone. But I see that as a good thing tbh.

So I've opted to go with a separate phone for work and have bought a Moto Edge 50 fusion and paired it with an EE SIM through my broadband account.

My previous employer was a Google user, as such, all of my photos etc were stored on Google photos. I now need to transfer all of my photos and WhatsApp chat to my new phone.

If I set up my new work phone using my personal Google account, and then use the Google transfer option to move files, photos over etc, will all of the photos then merge with my personal Google account? Am I better off setting up a new personal Google account for my work phone to keep it separate from my personal account?

My new employer uses Microsoft
