OK, I've come to RGB lighting almost by accident, so I've found my self in this situation:
I have a Corsair Graphite 780T case, with LED fans. These are not RGB, but fixed colour. They are controlled by the built-in case controller and currently that's fine for me. They run at full speed all the time, as noise is not a problem to me.
The motherboard is an Asus Prime X299-A. It has a single 4-pin RGB output and no D-RGB output. It has built-in lighting as well, which I control via the Corsair iCue software which also controls the RGB RAM.
Now the water-cooling problem: I have an EKWB block for the CPU which is 4-pin RGB, but the combined pump/reservoir is 3-pin D-RGB. That means that currently I can't use the lighting on the latter.
What the best way to control both block and reservoir? I would prefer that they are synchronised, but this is not a deal-breaker.
One obvious way would by a new block with D-RGB and a single controller for both, which would by £100-£150 at least. Yes, it depends on the model of both. This would then present the issue of synchronising to the motherboard controller. Does Corsair do such a controller? Yes, I could google it...)
Another way would by a separate controller just for the reservoir, which seems silly. And would leave the sync issue, plus yet another bit of software for a single item. Money is a consideration here, as is disruption - I've had the loop in bits twice in a month and would rather not do it again soon.
Note: I have no plans for any further lighting effects, so I only need the two channels.
Can anyone think of anything I've missed? I am assuming that the different voltages for 3-pin RGB and D-RGB means that any direct combining is likely to be Bad Thing.
