Recently reinstalled this and playing via the "First Decade" compilation pack and 1.03 patch. Hugely enjoying myself and currently about half way through the NOD campaign. However is it just me, or did Westwood code the AI with a huge unfair advantage even cheating when it comes to resources and production? On at least a couple of levels now I've either captured or destroyed the enemy construction yard and tiberium refinery. However despite this supposedly starving the opposition of cash the AI continues to churn out vehicles and troops from the respective structures until these too are captured and/or destroyed.

I therefore don't feel much hestitation in using the old sandbag ploy to either "box in" their base or in later levels move defense platforms closer. I know it's a bit of an exploit which of course was no longer available in Red Alert but it kind of redresses the balance.

I'm also finding enemy grenadiers far more accurate and lethal than I remember!

Still a great game to play through again - it's probably 15 years or so since I last played the original and it's fantastic getting it working on Win 7, the only artefacts being the video playback having some distortion and instant scrolling of the map preventing fine positioning.

OP kills my memorable thoughts about the game instantly by reminding me how olde I am :( :o

ROFLOL.

I used the 1.03 patch as it was the only one I could find on what appeared to be a reputable site. The main thing it adds (AFAIK) is higher resolution graphics which in itself is a bit of a cheat as it means on the smaller maps you don't need a comms tower for a map overview.

Managed to slog through onto NOD 9 - very tough start where you have to try and get the commando, engineers and rocket troops down the map to the derelict base. If you succeed almost immediately under attack with no time to build troops or a weapon depot.

Well NOD 9 has me stumped at the moment. Got the commando, one surviving engineer and the bazooka guys down to the old base, but it all gets wiped out in a relentless ground, air and sea (gunboat) assault. I can't think of any other way to approach this as the issue is you simply can't build up your defences quickly enough to stem the tide. NOD was always about weight of numbers rather than heavy units but if you can't build your force up to counter the initial attack - we're doomed!

Switching to the GDI campaign for now to see how far I get with that.

Have now pushed through GDI missions and on the tail end of 13 or 14, where you have to destroy the research centre. NOD MCV and airfield gone, just mopping up the rest and maxing out finances to (hopefully) carry forward to next mission. Need to eliminate a few more power stations to neutralise the dreaded obelisks and the last SAM site so I can bring in the airstrike and the coup de grace with the ion cannon.

Must admit to sandbagging my way into the enemy bases, putting up a few AGT's (out of range of the obelisk) and letting rip. Sell just before the enemy destroys it and you get a few troopers (albeit with 10 sec life expectancy) plus 50% of your money back so cheaper than building a tank.

GDI missions seem slightly easier than the NOD ones which I will return to once GDI is in the bag.

And ATM, best of all playing this - no Steam log in angst!!
