I'm just making my mum a new site for her small business, and thought i'd ask for a few opinions :)

http://www.houlbrooke.co.uk/dev/simplyflowers/

The design isn't really very imaginative, but i wanted to keep it as simple as possible, and i don't have enough time/creative ability, to do anything really special.

The front page may get a randomly changing image later to make it a little more interesting.

I'd like the website to appear well on search engines, but with the small amount of content this could prove to be a bit of a pain!

So what do you think of the website as a whole?

Thanks

This will sound really false but it's not: I think that is a great site, and everything just works and very complimentary and subtle colours. The only improvements I can think of would be to reduce the filesize of the image on the homepage and possibly include something under the footer of the pages, could be google advert; who knows - but it does look a tad bland at the bottom.

Very nice. :)

Yeah i need to work out how to fix that! It'll occur in most browsers where the page is to big for the window, and you have to scroll.

The front page image will be changing soon, so i won't be doing much to that :)

Google advert? :o

I'll have a think about what to put at the bottom. We're just going through content at the moment.

It is nice and simple :) I'm not too sure about the photo on the first page though - the mirror is a bit of a distraction, maybe try other ways to take that photo, or do an external, shop front, type of shot?

Also, I wonder if you might give a credit to the people who did the testimonials - to give some sort of idea who the customers are to add an extra personal touch to the site?

Another thing to think about I guess is to allow an alternative to the nice gallery in the 'our work' section - I like it, but Flash wasn't detected in my browser because I have NoScript running (I'm probably in the minority here) but a non-flash gallery as an alternative might be a good extra feature, to improve accessibilty?

I'll be changing that photo, and making it so there are a few photos and it selects one to display each time.

Yeah, i'll probably be doing that, and putting in approximate dates (eg. July, 2005).

There's a whole Coppermine gallery that's linked to from that page :) I guess i need to make the link more obvious :D

Code:
#outer
{
	position: relative;
	margin: 0 auto;
	background: #fff;
	width: 660px;
	text-align: center;
	[color=Yellow]height: auto;[/color]
}

:)

Good point, I guess I missed it because it requires javascript to be accessible from the link, although, there are two links with the word 'gallery' on that page that link to different presentations (flash / coppermine).

The coppermine gallery is very nice though :)

I know I'm getting picky, but I reckon you could use the purple flower in the background for a nice favicon.ico for that extra touch :)

very simple, I like it.

but, for me, when there's no shopping cart then there has to be contact details on every page. To make it easy for people to order, whichever page they are in. Gotta make the customer's life easy. -just my opinion

Nice site but i dont like that photograph its completly wrong and out of place, if the site is going to attract people to the flowers they need to be done to a professional standard, with a white background and stuff...

I like it, nice and clean, CSS, fast, looks nice and goes with the site content.

Very good :)

Craig.

The photography is generally not up to the standard of the site.
The information about the company should be the front page (you can have a nice photo too)

Otherwise, it's nice.

I'm going to go live with it now :)

I've changed the front page photo, and layout slightly. There's now a description of the business, which should help people visiting, and also my google rank! (maybe).

Ok, i'm REALLY confused by this problem with PostCardViewer ('our work' page).

http://www.simplyflowers.biz/ourwork/

All i've done is uploaded the files to the site hosting, yet it doesn't appear to load the images now. I've tested it on two machines (Mac and PC), and the Mac won't show it in FF, but will in Safari, and the PC won't show it in FF or IE! I've deleted and reuploaded, and even tried the example for the PostCardViewer site!

Anyone got any ideas? as this is strange.
