Wondered if you nice people would have a look at this spec for a friend and pass judgement/make changes etc etc etc...

Their total buget is £500 but I've gone a bit over - would appreciate anything that would bring it back down to that though!

The system will be used for the usual email/internet, plus MS Office applications (haven't included it in the spec, as they will buy that themselves elsewhere as they get discount,) watching TV and also photo editing - something they're very keen on and very good at.

There's no overclocking to be done, and the system won't get upgraded for at least three or four years.

The spec must include everything - including software and the 56k modem (no broadband) - except speakers, printer and scanner.

[edit - not fussed whether it's AMD or Intel based. Right now they're also looking at a couple of Dells - the 3130 I think[/edit]

Yep, defo onboard:
"Integrated VIA UniChrome Graphics, up to 64MB shared memory " from the ASUS website.

looks good, I'd buy Geil DDR2 ram for the same price instead of the Corsair value select since they have a heat spreader.

I prefer the black OC 400W case and reackon it would be easier to find matching drives for it.

Hmm. Not a bad idea Ghostrider.

The black case would go better with the black monitor and I could switch the media reader and DVDRW for black versions....
Not to mention the extra grunt on the PSU.

Do the heatspreaders make that much of a difference?

Works out a few quid more but I'm sure that won't hurt their left over budget for software a lot!

If there very keen and good at photoshopping, have you not thought of introducing a decent GPU for the machine? You can get a decent card for around £100.. well worth it IMO

Yes, but the budget doesn't allow it. The system I've picked has onboard graphics, and is at the top end of their budget, so I've got no room to play with to get a £100 card on top.

Plus anything will be a good step up on what they've got just now - their current system is quite old.

I don't really see why a £100 graphics card is needed for PhotoShop. It runs on anything, really.

Can't say I'd go with Norton on the anti-virus/firewall side of things. I know it's an easy package, but there are far better options out there that don't bring systems crawling to snail's pace just by installing them (NOD32, for example). Something to consider, anyway.
