I've put together the cart below for a gaming build for my son, which also needs to be VR ready (HTC Vive). I'm not at all up to date on what's good & what's not, so any advice or thoughts would be appreciated before I click buy.

The build is based on the Tom's Hardware "Best Gaming PC for £1000" build here, and he will be reusing his existing mouse / KB / monitors

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £952.08
(includes shipping: £13.20)

A few small changes (mainly a compromise on the case and RAM) allows for an Intel 8350K which handily beats the Ryzen across almost all applications - it's where my money would go. Don't forget to budget in a cooler as I don't think the 8350K comes with one.

1060 AIB with better cooler. Those reference/blower types can be noisy and temp will be hotter. That KFA2 model should be in stock soon, maybe ask.

Faster RAM.

Ryzen 1600 + better motherboard (Ryzen 1600 should be in stock again soon).

Slightly better PSU.

^^Top 2 out of stock and the PSU is a pre-order. Fine if the OP isn't in any rush but I thought it prudent to point it out :)

Yes. PSU has recently been reviewed by several sites (very well) so should be any day. Ryzen 1600 has to be any day.

i3-K would need an aftermarket cooler.

  • Upgraded the CPU to the more powerful Ryzen 1600 (soon in stock) - qualifies for 2 free AAA games:

  • If you buy that Samsung 850 SSD almost anywhere but Overclockers, you get Assassins Creed: Origins for free:

  • Different GTX 1060 chosen. This one performs quieter and at lower temperatures. Gigabyte also offers UK RMA, unlike ASUS

  • Changed the case - this one includes 2 120mm fans, as opposed to 1 in the original choice

  • Changed PSU - 550w is plenty for future upgrades. The chosen SuperFlower unit is very efficient, 5 year warranty and is reviewed well. You could save £10 by choosing the Bitfenix unit linked on the previous posts.

Thanks everyone, this is really appreciated. Not in a massive rush to order (need it by start of Dec), so happy to wait if there are better options coming shortly.
