Looking at ordering a new rig over the next few days. After scanning the forums I am thinking of the following: -

CP-128-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN)
£214.95 £214.95
MB-152-AS Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-152-AS)
£137.95 £137.95
MY-014-GS G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400PHU2-2GBNR) (MY-014-GS)
£106.95 £106.95
CA-038-LL Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Silver Aluminium Midi-Tower Case (No PSU) (CA-038-LL)
£47.95 £47.95
HD-018-SA Samsung SpinPoint P SP2504C 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-018-SA)
£42.50 £85.00
AC-000-AC Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) (AC-000-AC)
£5.50 £5.50
GX-053-HT HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-053-HT)
£203.95 £203.95

Any thoughts on the above would be gratefully received. The only other question I have is the PSU. I already have a Akasa Ultra Quiet 460W which is about a year old. I'm hoping will this be enough for the new rig but should I be looking to at 600w PSU. If so any recommendations. The Seasonic seems to be popular.

For starters, 460w is enough power for a single carded rig. 380w is all you need, no-matter what other people try to convince you of...

Personally, i'd go for the Gigabyte DS3 or DS4 mobo as it has the newer bios and supports Conroe, instead of having a modified bios like the mobo you have in the specs.

I wouls also look at Corasir or OCZ ram, just because the Gskill has a few problems with the Gigabyte boards and over the years I would say that Corsair and OCZ have been the most relaible.

I would suggest the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB it's a well known brand and are very stable, fast and silent they also have a 5 year warranty, i have 1 and is my favourite so far

thanks for the suggestions.

Is there any particular flavour of the Corasir RAM you would recommend? What works good with the Gigabyte mobo?
Personally I would go for the PC6400 C5 or the C4 if in budget.... It's what i've just bought!

No real budget, just trying to keep the costs down a bit as the missus wants a 24" wide-screen monitor (that I will obviously plug into :-)).

So revised specs are

Undoubtedly!

Nothing wrong with the Samsung drives either btw, I went for a Seagate but only cos I wanted to 320gb model. The Hitachi, Samsung & Seagate drives are all good and reliable.

Adnams would be better, would even settle for some Green King IPA but alas, only Stella in the fridge.

One other thing. Do you happen to know if the Gigabyte boards come with any SATA cables. OC is out of stock of the bog standard cables and I am not really interested in the fancy flashing, lighty ones

All mobo's come with at least 2xSATA, 2xIDE & 1xFloppy

Any ideas what the stock cooler are like with the retail E6600? I have a Zalman CNPS7000B sitting on top of my Athlon Xp 2200+ at the moment. It would be nice to have something as quiet.

The scythe ninja is about the best available.... but it's huge. Can be very quiet if you undervolt the fan

Have placed the order now so just have to sit back and wait for the big box of goodies to arrive. Haven't bothered with another heatsink and fan at the mo. Will wait and see what the bundled one sounds like. If it sounds too loud I will get another.
