Hi,

It is a long time since I built a PC from scratch and so I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with the current array of choices, however I have put together the following spec for a machine that I am hoping to order toward the end of the week and wondered if people could give me an comments on what they thought or whether I should have made other choices?

  • Case - Antec TJ07B-W - my only concern here is whether this case can take an internal water cooling system if I want to add one later on. I know the TJ10 does but I prefer the layout of the TJ07.

  • Motherboard - Asus P6T Deluxe - Supposed to be one of the best i7 motherboards and good for overclocking.

  • Processor - Intel Core i7-920 - reasonable price with good scope for overclocking.

  • CPU Cooling - Akasa Nero

  • Memory - Corsair Dominator TR3X6G1600C8D - Good RAM with scope for overclocking.

  • PSU - Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W - A little overspeced for this build but should future proof me when I add additional graphics cards, etc.

  • Storage - OCZ Vertex 120GB - fast SSD for OS, etc.

  • Storage - Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ - for general data

  • Graphics - XFX Geforce GTX 295 PCI-E - I was initially going to go for two GTX285s but figured I would get good performance from the GTX295 for less money and be able to add another GTX295 later if needed.

  • Optical Drive - Pioneer BDR-203BK-SW Blu-Ray/DVD±DL Writer

  • Monitors - 2x LG Flatron W2252TQ 22" TFT Screen (2ms) - I found finding decent reviews on monitors quite difficult so any suggestions are welcome.

What do people think? Have I got anything wrong?

Thanks in advance.

hi
you obvisouly mean silverstone TJ07, and yes it can take internal WC, its THE best case for WC, but not sold here unfortuantely
youre right that the psu is overspecced, 850 W will still be plenty for future
re SSD I wouldnt buy one atm, theres still a few bugs in them being worked out, I recomend you go over to techreport and read a few of their latest articles on them, theyre pretty in depth but will allow you to make a good informed decision
gfx card wise Id say dont go that OTT, get a 275 for now, theres new DX11 cards out later this year so I wouldnt recomend buying high end gfx atm
very nice system all round though

Yes you were right I did mean the Silverstone TJ07 confusion caused because I had been looking at the Antec Twelve Hundred as an alternative.

Do you have any recommendations on 850W PSUs, the Seasonic M12D just got very good reviews in the CustomPC mag?

Just had a read of the TechReport articles on SSDs and I think you're right, I will wait a while and see what comes along with the release of Windows 7 and the new TRIM technology.

With the GFX card you think a single GTX275 will be sufficient for a while? is there any advantage in a pair at this stage, or should I just get a single and add a second if I feel it's needed later?

And for future reference, what watercooling set-up would you recommend for the TJ07 or can you point me a website/thread that will help me out.

Thanks.

Re PSU, BeQuiet are excellent
gfx yeah a 275 should be fine for most things on max settings, if you really wanted you could get a 285 but as I say theres new cards out later in the year
check out the overclocking and cooling section, as well as the case section, the OC&C will give you ideas on what to get, the case has some nice project logs. Its not cheap to get decent WC though, custom set ups run into 3-400 quid

If you want to overclock on air, this cooler and this fan are what you want.

If you want a gtx 295, this is the one to have. A gtx 275 will likely do you well though - dx 11 cards are coming out soon.

This 850W PSU is great (currently out of stock tho), its what I plan to buy in the next month.

That RAM is crazy, get this stuff, its just as good. It definately goes up to 4.2GHz as its what OCUK use in the overclocked bundles.

Ok, I think I will go with the GTX275, the 850W PSU if I can get it and the cooling you suggested.
One last decision really - The Case - I get the feeling from reading many reviews and forums, etc. that the Silverstone TJ07 is a great case if I want to water cool, but not as good at air cooling, and if I want to air cool then the Antec Twelve Hundred is probably better. However, at the moment I don't know if I'll need to water cool or not. I am planning on clocking the machine so the cooling will be important but can anybody give me any idea whether they think I will need to water cool or not (envisaging upgrading to higher spec dual graphics later when DX11 comes out, etc.) or whether I should be ok to stick with air cool, and so help inform my case choice?

Thanks again for the help.

If I were you Id go for the 1200 and stick to air cooling
AC is very good nowadays anyway, if later down the line you do decide you really want to try water you can always sell the 1200 on and get the TJ07
