Community build?

Following G-Dubs ' Car boot ' project got me thinking, a lot of us have bits lying around collecting dust, possibly never to be used again, so how about pooling it all together and doing a build?

We can go for 2 options i feel;

Option 1

A built PC using parts donated by members for a local cause or charity

Option 2

A built PC using parts donated by members for a lucky member of the forum

Breaking the idea down into several phases:

  • Phase one is nominating someone to to do the build,
  • Phase two is the design ( if it's to be designed for the members, ie a scratch build )
  • Phase three is anyone who has bits spare, sends it over to the nominated person who then proceeds to do a build based on the items they get sent.
  • Phase four is the completion

The project design, ideas, etc can be between everyone, whether it's air cooled, water cooled or whatever, hard drive sizes, case or no case etc.

The build for a local cause perhaps won't require an extreme rig in parts, but the members rig we could perhaps up the anté abit in parts etc

This would require people to spend a little money sending items to the builder ( what you have spare! ), as well as a mature attitude to decisions etc,

We should however, consider the legal side of things, OS's etc, especially if we are to donate the rig a local cause/charity

Any thoughts?

Charity auction it off?

That was the idea in general, local charity's etc would welcome a working PC, it's a little coverage for OCUK as well ( community based ) or perhaps someone has something in mind.

Whoever is to build it would ideally have to have a case, the cost to post will be asking a little too much from some of us to post a large item ( unless they're local to the project builder ).

Overall the parts required ( simple build )

Motherboard
Memory
Graphics card
CPU
Cooling
PSU
CD drive ( or DVD )
Case to put it in

Or perhaps we could think outside a standard box and go for something a little different, a nice water cooled rig with some decent parts and raffle it off on here to a lucky winner.

The idea is a community ( OCUK ) based build which will benefit someone, whether here or elsewhere, built by the community.
At most it could cost ( using the word loosely ) you some spare parts or if you wish to build it, some time to put it together

Who's going to build it?, we should have a poll for that.

The one with the case/project idea should provide the case ideally, or perhaps we could persuade OCUK to donate one ;)

I'll link the thread around the forum and try and rustle up some interest for a week and then we can finalise the idea from there.

Please keep your comments/ideas coming :D

they adapt computers for disabled people. Get intouch with them.

they refurb donated office pcs and are always looking for stuff.

That's a really great idea! It would be good to help those less fortunate than ourselves especially if it means using stuff that would otherwise just gather dust in my bottom drawer...

A better suggestion is to build a really desirable PC from left over parts and auction it off (via members market?) for charity. One PC vs. the cash from selling a really cool PC is a no-brainer.

Desirable, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder but even a low spec PC, with perhaps water cooling, braiding, windows, custom paint job etc is what I'm thinking..

I've always liked the idea of making an "Orac" PC (yes, I know it has been done before!), using a clear box, loads of LEDs, water cooled, central "plasma ball" thingy...

This would be quite good i could donate an old 8800 if you could get it working ? Head that the oven trick might fix it.

This was the general idea, building 2 units ( or more if it takes off ). A local cause isn't going to benefit from a high end unit, but a lot of us have oldish ( 2years or so ) parts which are plenty for a local cause to use for email/internet and basic works.
