Hi,

I noticed the other day there was about 4/5 people with florecent jackets on with a hand held speed camera device. They were aiming it at people entering the village. They had no markings and looked fairly young, i would say between 17 - 24 year old. Looked really odd anyway. I remember reading something a while ago about police issuing people in small communities with the equipment, but not sure if they actually have authority to pull people over / issue tickets ?

Either that or they have found it on ebay ? :p

my mums town does this, they can't prosecute but you get a "child killer" letter through the post

Funny enough I was gonna ask about this. Some of my students at the college I teach at have been telling me about this. They describe them as a gang of vigilantes who jump out on them with a camera and high visibilty vest.

Driving home the other night the Police were at the roadside with a speed gun and a gang of old fogies in high visibility vests. Looked like the Police were showing them how to operate it. To be honest I was well under the speed limit but the glare I got from them. What is the point of it all?

People are taking the whole speeding thing to far now i think. Dont civilians have better things to do with there time than doing a police officers job?

They showed this on the local news ages ago when they were first came up with the inspired idea. The clip showed a woman who must have been 90 holding a speed gun pointing it at a car and calling out the speeds to some other old fogey to write down.

The funny thing was there was a car coming along doing 35 in a 30 limit and she called out "35" in a dissaproving tone then as a Mrs Shaky hands jerked the camera it jumped up to the mid 40's. "45!" she called out in horror.... no love, thats because you can't hold the camera steady

Stupid idea and if I see any I'm going to nail it as hard as my poor little 306 can go then drop back to the limit after I've passed them :o Police for police work, not machines or opinionated wanna be coppers.

ROFL :D

I believe its called dailymailitis, once you catch it the symptoms are thinking everyone is out to get you and YOU have to do something to protect YOUR village.. dads army 21st century!

the daftest thing is the people they shake these cameras at will probably slam their brakes on and lose control of their car whilst paying no attention to anything (pedestrianms, kids, other cars etc, y'know, boring stuff) other than the penis in the yellow jacket.

It would be just if someone ploughed the lot of them down for being Jobsworths!!! I hate do gooders who have nothing better to do with there lives. Why don't they go watch Emerdale with the rest of the villiage rather than giving people grief for merely driving a flippin car!! ridiculous!!

How is that possible unless they have access to the DVLA database?

more to the point its not that far off the sort of things animal rights people do, you watch, you'll start getting fringe loonies digging up your relatives because they caught you doing 40 in a 30.

I don't agree with people taking the mickey with comments of "child Killer" or "think of the children" (please nobody take this as a personal attack it isnt aimed at anyone here). As a father of a young child people speeding in built up areas does concern me. Infact the thought of the horror of knocking down a child makes me extra careful around schools and residential areas.

However this whole speeding thing is getting out of hand. Why are cameras on dual carriageways and not outside schools. Why do they concentrate on somebody breaking the 30mph limit at 3am in the morning rather than catch people, drunk, no licence or insurance and poorly maintained vehicles.

Encouraging civilians to take the law into their own hands is never a good idea. Were is it going to stop will they issue them with breath testers next?

They would argue however, that if people drove along with their eyes glued to the speedometer, they wouldn't have to stand in the rain with their cameras.

lol

I fear this road pricing nonsense.. black box in my car? and thats ONLY going to tell you where I'm going? Don't make me laugh.

says it all really doesn't it.

its like hes saying..

you've let me down, you've let yourself down blah blah blah

I'd get myself banned just trying to wind him up

On my road, which is a 30 limit with a school on it, cars regularly come caning down at anything up to 70mph. It is not a d/carriageway, it's a normal suburban road that buses use.

An old chap got knocked over down near the school and was put in a wheelchair for about a year, he was extremely lucky not too have been killed.
The skidmarks near where he was hit were approx 40yds long and the road conditions at the time were dry.

No speed camera here and I for one would like one in this area.

About 1/2 mile away on a dual carriageway with a 50mph limit is a camera, about 800 yds further on is a roundabout.

What is the point of that, when there are better places to put them to try and stop accidents. (This is what the government tell you they are for.)

You don't tell us how fast the car was going that hit the old man down, just how fast was he going? Not reported in the paper? Did it have anything to do with speeding?
