I liked Pierce in the show but Chevy Chase seems like a tool and I'm glad that he's leaving, he was dragging the show down with behind the scenes drama.
Chase has said in interviews that he thinks the sitcom is the "lowest of the low" when it comes to TV.
Guy is a colossal ****.
If he thought it was that bad why do it? desperate for money
Afaik, Harmon is a drunk, has issues with most people but the most public/loud with Chevy. Chevy was absolutely right in that in the first season and some of two, he was just a funny older character, the made some jokes about his age and some not particularly bad race ones, but that was it. Towards the end of 2 and all of 3, his character was descended into a racist, senile, dithering moron, his character wasn't funny and the show went massively downhill.... and lots of people thought this, not just Chevy.
However Chevy thought this was Harmon trying to make his character make Chevy look stupid as an actor because Harmon didn't want him on the show, and honestly, thats the way it looked. He was great in the first series, in the third, his "jokes" were things like drinking ink from a pen.... being drug addled, and racist.
The main issue is, Chevy was right, and from interviews I've seen, he thought the show was great but has become a bog standard boring sitcom since then and doesn't like the direction and his comment about race recently wasn't remotely racist, but anger at the direction of the show and a statement that he wondered essentially, if the next step in the decline would be having him be a full on racist in the show.
Either they wanted him out and made his character unbearable to play, or the show was going completely downhill and wanted his character to be a racist unfunny ****.
I honestly don't know, but the decline in the show has been clear as day, if Chevy quit because it got even worse.... I guess we'll see when the series finally airs if he was right or not.
Either way, Harmon's behaviour publically towards Chevy was as unprofessional as you get, somewhat showed off exactly who he is as a person... and rather reinforced the drinking problem idea. Get someone in t a room privately and swear your face off if you want, but to try and publically humiliate someone, infront of the cast AND Chevy's family.... in that argument/situation there was one man in the wrong, so completely in the wrong the network got rid of him.
Also, afaik, Chase is like, rediculously rich, he was doing it because he wanted to do a comedy again, and afaik, he liked the show, just not where its gone since.
