Currently looking at a job 60miles away, moving is not an option. It's mostly motorway, and my car will do around 40mpg is doing 600 miles a week to get to and from work a silly idea? Anyone do that kinda commute?

Depends on the type of motorway driving. I do 60 miles from Milton Keynes to Slough on the M1/M25 and it's a nightmare, it can take over 2 hours.

Will you be paid petrol allowance?

Do you like your car? Does it meet your needs? Can you afford it? Do you like driving long(ish) distances?

If yes, then no. ;)

Assuming £1.05/L, I make that over £70 a week in fuel - unless its a very well paying job, it isn't something I'd consider - perhaps consider a Diesel?

That said, if you will go for the job regardless, you need to really think whether the extra 10MPG of anything but the most modern Dervs is going to be worth it.

not personally, but I think 60mls each way is pretty standard. I know of at least 12 people who do that kind of mileage currently.

Depends on:

- The Car
- Your Financial Situation
- Your willingness to sit in said car

Everyone on earth has different answers to all the above so how can we judge.

Is the cost of getting you to and from work going to be less than the pay increase you'll get from taking the job?

If not - get a job that's closer, but maybe not quite as well paid.

I do 70 mile round trip a day, and it's ~25 miles of M4 and ~5 miles each end of fairly quickly moving A roads, so takes me about 45 minutes each way.

It's not just the fuel cost, it's the additional time added to your day, each and every day!

I'm not sure about petrol allowance, its mostly the m1 (Sheffield to harrogate).

I do like my car but not sure id like it after driving that far all week.

The job isn't brilliantly paid, but is a very good springboard for me.

The car is 1.4 16v cinquecento sporting.

I realise its all subjective and am not posting for anyone to tell me what to do, just trying work out what kind of commute is the norm

I used to commute 45 miles each way at around 33mpg. I did it for about 8 months and was using a tank of fuel (45l) every 4 days or so.

Can't be bothered doing the maths to see if that adds up :p

In the end I moved closer to work and rented a flat with a mate. It worked out cheaper to do this than the cost of living at home and the fuel bills. Not to mention I got nearly 2 hours of my day back.

Like I said, moving is not an option - the missus and I live in Sheffield because she is at uni here, and doesn't drive, so no moving halfway!

No way in a million years would i do that drive in such a small engined eggbox of a car, thats going to be a nightmare.

I commute 70 miles per day at around 28mpg and don't have any problems with it.

I wouldn't want to commute 120 miles a day in anything, especially a small town car.

Is the train an option?

I don't have a problem driving a small car, its nippy enough and doesn't struggle on the mway

The cinquecento would be horrible for commuting. I can't think of a worse car.

My VXR would be worse I reckon, it's fine until 60mph when the exhaust becomes very boomy it makes your journey hell.
