comp died, possible upgrade?

Hi all,

Been running a 2200+ XP, 1.5gb geil & a 9600pro for 2 and a half years I think now :s...

Anyway, it's pretty much been on all that time, fan's have gone etc... and the other night I came to it and it was running but no outputs. Mouse & KB were dead. Have tried everything, re-built it outside of the case on cardboard... tried different components and im fairly sure the mobo has died :s

Anyway, I was thinking about an upgrade. I've got an ATX Case & a 400w Antec ATX2.0 PSU, 1.5gig pc3200 geil (presume won't work)... 2 x 120gb ide hdd's, dvd/cd roms, monitor...

Basically guess it's probably best for me to go the C2D route? Can anyone recommend an upgrade that's cheap (think i'l need a graphics card as well, do enjoy games but not overly fussed about top end settings.......)

Cheapest C2D upgrade would be to buy an asrock motherboard that has both AGP/PCIE slots AND space for DDR 1 and 2... OCUK does not stock them so you will have to look else where. THe board is about 35 - 40 pounds.

E6300 conroe about 130

Then say an X1950 pro for about 130.

thats around 300, then probablly a new PSU, say the Corsair one, 520W around 70... so around 400 including shipping and whatever else.

This way you can keep your old DDR1 ram, and can go DDR2 later, or even keep your current GPU if you dont game much.

I presume the Asrock boards are naff when it comes to overclocking? I suspose that'd be a plan though as I could upgrade when I needed to then. Is the Asrock the best option when it comes to AGP/PCI/DDR1/2 ? Any compatibility issues? Do they have IDE?

There is a thread in the motherboard section of this forum. From (MEMORY) the board is called Asrock Dual Vsta or something. its obviously a 775 board.

Yes, its not great at overclocking, tops out at about 300FSB typically. A lot of boards hit 400 FSB.

If you dont mind spending your budget + a bit more, you could get:

DS3 80 or so
E6300 130
X1950 pro 130
DDR2 OCUK 6400 140
Corsair PSU 70

But with the Asrock ,at least its a stepping stone.

*EDIT* it has 2 IDE ports, so thats 4 IDE devices. Plus sata ports.

I think i'm going to hold off until I get back off holiday and upgrade at the end of jan to the last spec you've just posted...

Gonna have to make do with this duron 900mhz effort I was using as a nas until then :o

If you wanted to save some cash on the last spec I posted, you could always get the Gigabyte S3 instead, almost the same board, just made with slightly different materials (will save ya a few bucks).

Cut the PSU down to an FSP sparkle 500W (around 12 quid cheaper).

With the ram you could in theory get 2x 512 now, and then just pump in another 1 GB after your holiday. Sell your current ram/anything else not broke to help you out too.

*EDIT*

You could also save money by getting a Nvidia 7900 GS too. though they will perform worse than the X1950 Pro. Probablly will save about 15 or so pounds if ya did go for it.

think I may go with that, I take it I do need a ATX2.2 PSU, my existing ATX2.0 won't work? no problems fitting that board in a standard atx case either is there? I proper don't know anything about the latest tech :o
 
i have that asrock mobo, but i was only using it as temp mobo got it at xmas hope to upgrade by the end of the month if you are interested in it
