.. after booting from the XP home cd.
anyone had any experience with this problem, and if so, what did they do to resolve it?

Any solutions ive found on the net need a working floppy drive to carry out, and as my a: drive isnt recognising floppys atm I can't resolve the situation.

I had this problem on a PC last week, which turned out to be a USB card reader.
The card reader was working perfectly, but the windows install just decided it didn't like it. I disconnected the card reader from the USB header on the motherboard and off it went :)

Try disconnecting any USB stuff you may have

Also, you don't have linux installed on any other partition or hard drive do you? Windows doesn't like that either :p

I had a problem similar to this for a WINME install when i added a new Graphics card. If u can, disable / unplug everything from the computer inside and out that you wont need for the installation. It should help as well as speeding up the install process a bit.

Well, it didn't work.

I've read that i might need to turn shadowing and all caching off in the bios and then try again...
Any adverse affects to me doing this? I dont think ive even heard of shadowing.
