I'm heading to NYC in September and originally I was thinking of just using my 4S but I've decided if I'm gonna take pics of the big apple I want something that's gonna do it justice!

I was looking at 2nd hand entry DSLR bodies on eBay but I've decided I'd much prefer something I could fit in my pocket..

What are the good compacts?

I've read good things about the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS and Samsung Galaxy camera, the latter of which might be more suited to me as I'd like to upload to Instagram :)

I know there are cameras for much more and much less but generally what do people recommend?

Thanks :D

If you want better than you iPhone but still truly compact (fits in your pocket) then your best of looking at the Canon s100/110 and the Sony RX100 depending on your budget. Both have good fast wide lenses and bigger sensors. Beyond that if your happy with a larger body then look to Fuji's latest oferings in the X-Series or any of the m4/3rd's options.

canon powershot g15 gets my vote same as the s100 / s110 but in a pro body, it has a hot shoe for a full size flash and dials for mode, iso, , shutter speed, exposure compensation etc... and good glass. worth looking into. good camera for learning photography as it offers most of what a dslr does.

something similar is the nikon p7700 but that is rubbish compared to the g15

Won't fit in the average pocket though will it!
